should i buy an ipod video player for 8th grade grad??

my stepson wants an ipod video player for graduation from 8th grade. (He really doesnt deserve to graduate since he failed at least 2 finals and never studies - but school may let him graduate anyway).

Should he still get one?

We dont like him using the internet, and we dont have high speed at home - only dialup. He claims there are alternantive ways to install songs and videos - such as from friends.

He is easily influenced by what he sees and hears so i dont think any video is a good idea for him even without internet.

Even an ipod without video may be a better alternative.

Would you still buy it if you were his parent?

About how much should each cost?

Are there compatible alternatives that are similar?

Well yes he can get music from friends and you can still monitor the music he puts on it. Also maybe you could get him an mp3 player or a video mp3 instead and it may motivate him to do good and be able to get a video ipod. I know that yes it is hard to see everyone in high school with the ipods because a lot of people do and he would proably feel left out too...

uhmm i dont think u should.. i think u should hold off on it for a bit and if hes dissapointed then tell him if he can do better in grade 9 the first term then he can use it .. he's rite about installing things from his friends.. you could get the ipod shuffle or something i dont know if that has video or not .. get him the second best thing and see how he reacts... and if he doesnt like it then tell him to get a job and buy one for himself. i think an ipod is about $200 but u can probaly get one off of ebay for less than that anyways i hope this helps

It's not necessary and difficult to monitor. He can download a lot of junk at his friends' houses. If he's already having trouble with class work, this will be yet another distraction. At this age it's a status symbol. They are expensive and "cool." If he really wants one he should be willing to earn part of the money doing yard work or doing well in summer school. Do a special family or father/son outing for graduation to mark his transition into high school.

He doesn't deserve one. You should have him do something that derserves it and give it to him as his prize. But as far as the Ipod... I would say a Zune is better. It's a 30GB and a bit cheaper than the Ipod. So go for the Zune once he works for it. I'm a stepmom so I'm thinking how it is in your position. It is up to you, but there are lots of alternatives to the Ipod. Check them out at http://www.walmart.com/search/browse-ng.do?ic=24_0...

Honestly you should stop being so protective. you can see what he puts on the ipod. I know you want to be a good dad and everything and i mean this in the nicest way but god hes going to be a freshmen in highschool you know. i would still get it for him [: and yes i would get it for him if it was my son.
