Can constant headaches be caused by low blood sugar?

My husband has had a constant headache for the past few months. (Yes, MONTHS) and nothing is helping it. He's gone to the doctor and has been referred to a neurologist, but can't get in until July. He's been given Imitrex, but it doesn't help. He got shots from the ER, but that didn't faze it either. He's had an MRI and that came back clear.

Anyway, this is actually a two-part question. When I was pregnant, I had hypoglycemia and found when I hit a horrible low, a swallow of maple syrup would make me feel better almost instantly. I tried this one morning with him, and worked for about 15 minutes, then came back, but not any worse than what it was.

Can hypoglycemia cause ONLY headaches, or are there other signs to look for? (It's been a while since I've had it so I can't remember the details.)

Any other suggestions until he can get to the neurologist? He's on a host of meds (nexium, wellbutrin, singulair, lomotil, albuterol inhaler) so he has to be careful...

Update:

...but any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Blessings

hey ive been in the medical field for 2 years and i have to say that yes hypoglycemia can cause severe headaches. and you said your husband got an MRI? well where did he go? and lmitrex isnt really a good drug to treat headaches, like the ones yourhusband is getting. ya know i have a strong feeling that your husband is a diabetic. if this is so the reason why he is getting these heads aches os because he dousent have enough sugar in his blood. so these headaches are trigured by lack of oxygen to the brain, nothing to severe, but without the glucose in the blood it dosent pump properly, so very small clots begin to form. so because of the lack of oxygen to the brain your husband suffers with these headaches. i also think that he is also pretty dizzy and nauseated. (sorry cant spell been up al night in the E.R.) so i think you should return to the docotor and have him be tested to see if he is dibetic. another side of i may be that he is getting way to much sugar. it is a posibility that he may be Hyperglycemic. dont see that very much though. Hope the Best for your husband. GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Diabetes and low blood sugar are totally opposite of each other, but it is very common for a diabetic to have bouts of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when they take too much insulin, don't eat when they should, and a variety of other reasons. Low blood sugar can cause nausea, sweating, shakiness, confusion, passing out, coma and even death. Many people that were hypoglycemic for many years find themselves being diagnosed with diabetes later on. Seems like for some (me included) that hypoglycemia can be a prelude to diabetes. You do have some symptoms of diabetes and you should be checked by a doctor to be sure. A person can be hypoglycemic and not have diabetes. My husband has had it most of his life and some times it is very bad, and he can have multiple low blood sugar episodes a day if he isn't careful to eat like he should. Here are some more of the most common symptoms of diabetes. They are symptoms for both types of diabetes. Constant thirst Frequent urination Constant hunger Irritability Blurry vision Itching skin with no rash Reoccurring yeast infections in women, itching penis in men Frequent boils Leg cramps Burning tingling sensation in hands, feet, arms, or legs Slow healing wounds Headaches Nausea or vomiting Get tested ASAP

Low blood sugar could cause headaches, but it would probably also cause other symptoms such as lack of energy, shaking (when very low).

If you think low blood sugar could be a factor, then go to a drug store and buy a glucose monitor and test strips. He can then test his blood sugar regularly and see if there is a pattern. You'll need:

    - the monitor

    - test strips that are specified by the monitor you choose

    - lancets to prick the finger to get the drop of blood needed. Look for the automatic pens for the lancets...it's way easier to use one of these than stabbing yourself with a lancet!

(lancet = small sharp blade usually embedded in plastic, just big enough to draw a drop of blood)

We have treated 15 - 20 yrs cases.

There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

    Acidity, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation;

Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.

Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Avoid late sleeping if possible;spicy, sour, stale bakery foods and alcohole.

Sweet foods, sweet fruits, milk, rice and good sleep will help you.

But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.

If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

I'm not a medical genius but maybe your husband needs to drink a lot of water, dehydration can be a cause, its not a cure but it may help a lot. :)
