Why when trading your can for another is yours always considered junk and their's perfect?

I've noticed that whenever I have tried to trade in a car and get something different, the dealers claim my cars have little or no value while whatever type of car I'm wanting is supposedly worth so much more? Case in point I have a really nice ex-police car, a 1994 Chevy Caprice in good shape, everything works etc and I was wanting to trade for something a bit smaller in this case an older 1989 midsize Olds Cierra and yet somehow the dealer thought his was worth way more. I went into space! Even reasoning with book value seems a moot point. I just want to swap straight across for something older and smaller though it is not looking to be likely.

it always works that way with me too. i just tell them i have no trade and dicker with them on price. if they don't come down to what i think their car is worth i tell them that i am going to shop around some more and maybe come back. in most cases they drop the price to within a couple 100 bucks of what i want to pay for the car. then i just sell my old one and come out ahead. if they don't drop the price of the car then i walk.
