Where can I find a really good laptop notebook cheap?

I am looking for a notebook laptop, thin, lightweight, built-in wireless card, and with Windows XP not Vista. (Unless you can convince me that Vista is a good thing.) It would be great if it also had a DVD player on it. I don't want to spend a lot, like not over $500 or $600. Where can I find one? I want it new, because I want the warranty and the backup from a reputable dealer. Help?

To get one for that price with XP you'll have to look on eBay but I bought a new computer with Vista and it's not bad. I don't recommend anyone to upgrade their old XP to Vista but when buying a new computer it's not a bad idea because it's built for it. When looking for a laptop here's what you need to look for:

Get at least 1024MB of Memory (1GB)

Get at least 100 GB hard drive

(The more the merrier on those two^)

Get Vista Home Premium (Basic is not worth it, you'd be better off with anything else)

This is very feasible for your price range and you can definitely get one with a DVD burner (possibly even lightscribe if you look at HP)

Buy when they're on sale, all models go on sale and it'll save you a lot of cash. I recommend HP because of their reliability but since you're on a budget (like most of us are) take a hard look at Acer. They start a little cheaper than some of the brands but do make very good computers. Hope this helps and email me with any more questions.

I might be able to convince you Vista is good if you are really gullible...

You're not going to find one with XP from all that reputable of a dealer, especially not at that price. You either have to release some of your limits (it being "really good", it having XP installed, it being "lightweight", it being $500-$600, it being new, it having a warranty, or it coming from a reputable dealer), or save up a little more.

Cyberpowerpc.com offers XP, though I don't know how reputable you'd find them, and they don't have an option at that price.

If you want to get a cheap computer from eBay of tiger direct or any other tech sites follow these instructions

    1. go 2 bign.com/wjames READ LETTER

    2. Click big n marketplace shop till u drop button

    3. Scroll down to the store you want to get the computer from and click it. If you close the page and come back example type in ebay.com you wont get a discount follow these steps and you will get it cheaper. You can also look on the list for other places to shop they have discount ink shoes and clothes and more. tell your friends don’t keep this a secret. One store I have to recommend for laptops is buy.Com store don’t go to buy.com directly or you will not get any savings. If you want a 400.00 laptop go to the best buy store and type in

    Everex - StepNote Notebook

"really good" and "cheap" do not really go together.

Think about what you want to buy, and think about what you can get for that. It will come down to value -- what do you get for your money, in the hardware, software, and service and support. If all you need is the hardware, you will probably do well shopping ebay or amazon.com and the like. Or try yahoo shopping. There are lots that put together lists of places to buy. But the selection is humungous out there, so what I would do is make a spreadsheet of prices, brands and features. Choices will be tough.

Best Buy, CompUSA, Ebay and Circuit City offer affordable prices. But be careful as their repair facilities and tech support are often not relieable. On the basis of my own experience, I would recommend you to buy direct from manufacturer such as Sony, Dell, Gateway and HP etc. They offer free shipping many times, you can also customize your computer online and they also have repair facilities with great technical support. They also offer you refurbished computer on a very low price with the same warranty as the newer one. If you like apple computers, they also offer you computer with different price ranges (mac mini costs you up to $500). I would not buy computer from ebay. As well you can call your local computer shops, more often they have great in store deals with great warranty. Always make sure, if the place you are purchasing computer offer good return policy.

Sony computers are solid and their price range is from $999 and up. I know, this is not your price range, but you may like to go with dell who has great reputation espeically their tech support is #1.

I would say Vista is great. I heard so many stories from people but I dont agree.

Window vista is jammed packed with new features, for example:

Security, power and performance, applied graphics and user interface improvements, wireless networking, desktop search, usability updates, new performance monitoring and diagnostics, and an upgraded bevy of onboard applications such as Internet Explorer 7+ and Windows Defender are some of the main areas where Microsoft has beefed up Vista.

There are issues with the compatibility of some older softwares etc, but it is due to the some of the hardware compatibility also. If you are planning to buy a new computer, I wouldnot go for xp. I was also used to with xp, and was hesitant to switch with Vista, but it's so many months now, not a single time, I have had a problem. My computer did not crash even once the way it used to with xp.

You may try the following sites:

    www.apple.com/store

    www.dell.com

    Good luck!
