How much to replace a mid-efficiency gas furnace?
Mine's 18. Gonna go. I want to save now but everyplace I call won't even give me an idea of how much it might be. Don't need duct work or anything, just a new furnace.

Don't waste your money on middle of the road. This is an area where labor to do the work is 1/2 of the price or more. The installation cost is the same for the cheap furnace and the high effecinecy model.
Invest in the highest efficiency unit you can. It might cost a bit more than the lower end models, but it will save you a bunch in energy. The cost of the furnace will be fixed today, but the cost of heating oil and gas has been steadily rising. This is truly one of those "pay me now or pay more utility bills later" type deals.
Also, the high efficency models will add appeal to your home value if you had to sell.
The HVAC companies won't give you a price over the phone because they need to measure your home and estimate the overall efficency of your home to suggest the appropriate size (BTU) of the new unit. This will be different than your old unit for sure.

Susann,
Furnaces come in several sizes & types. Prices vary by the size, type, upflow or downflow, AFUE, location, (basement, attic, crawl space etc and Brand Name. The city, town, state you live in can also affect the price as labor costs also vary.
No One can give yo a price based on the rather vague information provided.
Estimates are FREE. Call 2-3 HVAC companies and get some quotes. They will size your home to determine the proper size and then show you the types that will work and provide the price. Also check on the warranties that come with the furnaces.
DO NOT buy on price alone. There are some very good furnaces made today and there is still some junk sold. The lower priced furnaces may cost less at purchase but they require more maintenance ($$$) and service calls.
Good Luck.

I've worked on heating and air conditioning and have never heard the term "mid-efficiency." I doubt seriously that it's used in the heating and cooling industry although it may be used on the packaging. I'm not current on heating and cooling systems, but they all contain basic common components. The cost will depend on the kind of furnace, the brand, who you buy it from, where you're located, and who installs it. There is no way anyone on this site can give you a reasonable estimate of the costs with as little information as you provide. You need to talk with heating and cooling people and get estimates and you need to ask a lot of questions. You need to compare prices and determine if the purchase will include installation and whether the cost of installation is additional. If you're just buying the unit and having someone install it, make sure you know how much the installer will charge. If the unit is to be delivered, find out if there's a delivery charge. Get a written contract and warranty/guarantee from the both the seller and installer. Do the research in your area by talking to people. This is the best answer I can give you.
