I suspect your friend might be wrong on the decade. To an 11 year old, anything before Wicked is from the way-back machine. Here are the musicals from the '70s (or that continued into the '70s) that are still done/known: Godspell Grease Fiddler on the Roof Finian's Rainbow Jesus Christ Superstar Joseph.. Dreamcoat (more than four male roles) Hair Pippin (adult themes) Company (adult themes) A Little Night Music or Sweeney Todd (too advanced for middle school) Anyone Can Whistle Merrily We Roll Along Shenandoah You're A Good Man Charlie Brown or Snoopy Chicago (adult themes) Cabaret (adult themes) The Wiz or Purlie (all-black musicals) Annie They're Playing Our Song (semi-adult themes) Working (has more than four male parts) A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine EDIT: Once on this Island was a multi-Tony winner, and is done regularly in schools and community theaters.

All female parts are the same, some have songs you might like over others. Most productions don't split the parts how they originally did, its really an ensemble piece except for Jesus and Judas.

Some productions even cast women as Jesus or Judas.

    Source(s): I played Jesus.

Joanne (sings O Bless the Lord), Robin (sings Day By Day and Light of the World), Gilmer (sings Learn your Lessons Well and By My Side), Sonia (sings Turn Back, O Man), Peggy (sings Light of the World and By My Side).

Have fun! It's a great musical.

(I played Gilmer once, many moons ago.)

Every place I looked had 4 or 5 women in the cast.

Any of the apostles can be female. I've seen it done with a female Jesus as well.
