First, what is fat? It is tissue (otherwise known as adipose tissue) made up of cells that store energy and insulate the body. Fat is generally subcutaneous -- located underneath the skin. Where fat is deposited around the body depends on a person's gender. In men, fat tends to congregate in the chest, abdomen and buttocks. In women, it generally gathers in the breasts, hips, waist and buttocks.

There are two layers of subcutaneous fat: deep and superficial. During a liposuction procedure (also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy), the doctor makes a tiny incision and inserts a hollow, stainless-steel tube (called a cannula) into the deep fat layer. Working on this layer is safer than working on the superficial layer, because there is less risk of injuring the skin. In a typical procedure, the doctor pushes and pulls the tube through the fat layer (a new technique, power liposuction, automates the movement). As the cannula moves, it breaks up fat cells, and a vacuum pump or syringe removes the fat with suction.

Liposuction is most often used for cosmetic purposes, to give a smoother shape to areas such as the thighs, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, calves, arms or back -- areas that haven't responded to diet and exercise. It can also be used to reduce the size of male "breasts" or to remove fat tumors (lipomas, or abnormal fatty deposits). Fat can be removed from more than one part of the body during a single surgical procedure.

It's important to note that liposuction is not a weight-loss technique; it is merely a reshaping technique. Only diet and exercise can result in real weight loss.

You are better off working hard and losing it than using lipo. It's hard to believe, but if you let the doctor suck your fat out for you, there will be no health benefits associated with it. Let's say that you decide to have 20 lbs sucked out (by the way I believe that is the max amount they can take out in one sitting), after lipo you weigh 200. Your body however, isn't aware of that and will still function as a 220 lb body. You might look different on the outside, but the inside will be the same. The other thing is that lipo isn't going to help you lose all over your body like losing it yourself is. You are going to have to chose what regions you want the fat removed. Lipo is best for people who really need to "spot reduce" since that is not something that can be accomplished through exercise. Please get healthy for yourself. Start moving and eating better. If you need diet help I strongly recommend Weight Watchers. They make you accountable, no food is forbidden, and they have a great program. Also get out and just start walking. You can do this for yourself!

Usually surgeons like to see their patients lose a little bit of weight before a procedure (they'll probably ask you to lose 10-20 pounds first).

Then, if a surgeon accepts you as a patient and allows you to get the lipo, they'll make you go to sleep with some good drugs so you don't feel a thing while they are doing the lipo. Then they will inject some salty water into your fat cells, then suck out some fat cells with their suction machine.

You will hurt for a few weeks afterward. It will feel like a deep bruising sensation. But it will be worthwhile, cause once they take away those fat cells, they will never come back.

We are born with a certain amount of fat cells, and those fat cells can grow and shrink. But the ONLY way to get rid of fat cells is to have them surgically removed. Diet and exercise does Not "remove" them, it only shrinks them.

Cheers and enjoy your new body, hun! :-)

they stick an oversized needle inside your body and they pump it to suck the fat out of you....sounds appealing, huh?
