Why are charitable organizations asking for your credit card information when they call for donations?

I don't give to a lot of organizations. But lately when they call and you pledge money, they want you to give them your credit card number so they can "get the money to work faster". Isn't that the first rule of thumb: Never give your credit card number (or bank numbers or SSN) to anyone that calls you. They act disappointed and SHOCKED that you do feel comfortable doing that. Are they nuts or am I?

No, you're not nuts. NEVER give your personal information to anyone over the phone. I always ask them to send me their info so I can look it over. People actually sputter and say we don't do that, to which I say then you must not be legit. You can never be too careful.

I would tell them that if they want to "get the money to work faster" they should stop wasting time and send you the pledge paperwork BY MAIL. If they balk, find another charity.
