Taking into account the cream that is being used in the sauce, I would recommend looking toward Grenache based wines. due to its natural high alcohol content, this helps cut through the richness of the cream, whilst having enough body to stand up to the steak.

Grenache is most popular in Southern French and Spanish wines (Garnacha in Spain), so I would look at those regions to begin with.

My choice would be Rhone which are just the mutts nutts, and these are blended with Syrah (shiraz) amongst others. As it is the daddy of meats I would look to spend between £5 - £8 - $9 - $15; 8 - 13 euro).

Unless of course you are entertaining then start at £14 for a Chateauneuf des Papes, Mother Nature's way of saying "if you don't pull tonight you never will"

Argentine Malbec is generally good with steak, not to mention being inexpensive. You can get a pretty decent bottle for $10-15; look for something from Mendoza.

Another favorite is Coppola Claret, which is really quite a bargain for how good it is. Be sure to let it breathe.

If you can find it, L'Ecole No. 41 Merlot and Cabernet (from Washington State) are both quite good. So is virtually anything from Whitman Cellars, but especially their cabernet. A more moderately priced Washington wine that goes well with steak is the Chateau Ste. Michelle cabernet.

Hmm . . . it's the Peppercorn sauce that has me thinking as it depends upon the content of the sauce. I've had great luck eating peppercorn encrusted NY Strips with either an Argentinian Malbec or a Syrah and matched a mild peppercorn sauce medallion with an Australian Shiraz.

Really, you probably won't go wrong with a decent medium to full red. Check your local wine dealer if you are stumped. Haskell's in Minneapolis recommended a Graffigna Malbec and I loved it.

A Washington Merlot like Covey Run might work, though the peppercorn sauce is begging for Australian Shiraz like Penfolds Thomas Hyland.
