Essentially, it just gives water a lightly flavored taste. Minus sugar or sugar additives the water is beneficial in getting rid of toxins that are accumulated in the body. Other suggestions to make your water more enjoyable in addition to lemon, are lime or orange wedges. This will help cut the "bland" taste if water is not your typical health drink. You can also try the sports drinks that are an excellent source of nutrients: sodium and potassium rich drinks.

Lemons and other citrus fruits contain amounts of different chemicals and are thought to have some health benefits. They contain a terpene called D-limonene which gives their characteristic lemon smell and taste. Lemons contain significant amounts of citric acid; this is why they have a low pH and a sour taste. They also contain Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) which is essential to human health. 100 milliliters of lemon juice contains approximately 50 milligrams of Vitamin C (55% of the recommended daily value) and 5 grams of citric acid.
Health Benefits:
Some sources state that lemons contain unique flavonoid compounds that have antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. These may be able to deter cell growth in cancers. Limonins found in lemons could also be anti-carcinogens.
Because of its high Vitamin C content, lemon has been touted in alternative medicine as a tonic for the digestive system, immune system, and skin.
There is a belief in Ayurvedic medicine that a cup of hot water with lemon juice in it tonifies and purifies the liver.

The lemon in the water helps ease the feeling of being stuffed and uncomfortable after a big meal. Lemon also helps activate the liver to start the breakdown process and improves the absorption of the food and nutrients.

Lemon is a very powerful killer of bacteria. We used to use lemon in our water because before the days of filters and purifiers and such water was known to have bacteria.
It was said that even typhoid can't live in pure lemon juice.
I do know that when we added a teaspoon of lemon in a glass of water I didn't get diarrea and without it I did.
Vinegar and lemon were the only remedys we had for purifying water. We made hot tea and added lemon, apple cider vinegar and honey. That kept us from getting sick.

Lemons help to stabilize blood sugar and keep metabolism up and weight loss moving along. They also help to stimulate the body's natural cleansing and help to detoxify your system.
They are also supposed to help to bring your PH into balance and add vitamin C to your diet.
