Potassium is an element - it is just made out of pure potassium. Potassium chloride (also written as KCl) is a molecule made out of potassium combined with chlorine. They are different things.

The two "potassiums" are not the same. The potassium in potassium chloride is the potassium ION. It is a potassium atom with one electron missing (this electron is residing on the chloride ion to which the potassium ion is bonded). It has very different chemical properties than potassium, which is a solid in its elemental state. For example, potassium is a highly reactive metal, while the potassium ion is quite stable. The ionic form dissolves in water, while the elemental form reacts very violently in water. As a general rule, species in their elemental form and their ionic forms do not have the same chemical or physical properties.

When potassium gets combined by reaction with another element like chlorine represented by Cl it forms a compound called potassium chloride or KCl

Potassium Chloride (KCl) is a salt, that has Potassium (K) in it.
Potassium is just the elemental metal. They are not the same thing.
You can take (eat) KCl in small amounts. Your body uses KCl salt internally, and other K compounds for other chemical processes.

They are slightly different. Pure Potassium is not charged, while Potassium Chloride (in solution) has a charge of +1.

potassium chloride (KCl) is a compound that contains a molecule of potassium and a molecule of Chloride. This compound is a salt. Potassium (K) by itself is just a molecule of potassium.

The chemical compound potassium chloride (KCl) is a metal halide composed of potassium and chlorine. In its pure state it is odorless. It has a white or colorless vitreous crystal, with a crystal structure that cleaves easily in three directions. Potassium chloride crystals are either simple cubic or face-centered cubic depending on what atoms are involved. If only potassium or chlorine atoms are considered, then the structured is face-centered cubic. However, both atoms form a crystal with a simple cubic structure: x-ray diffraction analysis will yield a simple cubic structure. Potassium chloride is also commonly known as "Muriate of Potash". Potash varies in color from pink or red to white depending on the mining and recovery process used. White potash, sometimes referred to as soluble potash, is usually higher in analysis and is used primarily for making liquid starter fertilizers. KCl is used in medicine, scientific applications, food processing and in judicial execution through lethal injection. It occurs naturally as the mineral sylvite and in combination with sodium chloride as sylvinite.
