is there anyone out there who appreciates classic british comedy?

i can't stand anything on prime time or any popular shows for that matter. My husband and I live for saturday and sunday night britcoms that come on pbs. we've even rented a couple of seasons of Father Ted from netflix. i dont care how often i've seen an episode of red dwarf, Python, fawlty towers, blackadder, the young ones, absolutely fabulous, open all hours, the list goes on.... they are still hilarious. Even when american telvision producers try to copy something the brits have come up with it fails miserably...remember "coupling"? I've tried watching popular programs and i lose interest. they are just bad. not even funny. Anyone out there who has good taste in comedy? the brits have got us americans beat by a mile in terms of good television. i'm a proud american but in terms of being funny and original, they got us beat. Am I alone here?

Update:

LOL...my husband HATES Hyacinth!! She is INSANE!

Update 2:

Python rocks....those guys are so funny and brilliant and its sad because there are so many people that watch it and go, "I don't get it." Kids in the Hall are the same. I love those guys!

I love brit-coms. I really love Are you being served, red Dwarf, Doctor in the house , Monty Python, Any Black Adder, Dave Allen at Large, The Two Ronnies, Benny Hill, Fawlty Towers I could spend days watching this stuff and never be bored at all.

The Brits have a hands-down monopoly on comedy! Whether it's stand-up blokes like Dave Allen at Large, or the comedic genius of Benny Hill (R.I.P.), they get me rolling from word one. Then there are all of the series: Are You Being Served?; Keeping Up Appearances; Jeeves And Wooster (though it might not be considered a comedy per se, it fits) and so on, in addition to what you already listed. And like you, it doesn't matter how many times I see an episode, it's still as funny the umpteenth time as it is the first!

As a Young One's fan you gotta watch "Bottom" and "Filthy Rich and Catflap" , both starring Rik Mayall and Ade Edmundson. Nigel Planer is in Filthy Rich and Catflap, too. Then there's Thin Blue Line about Rowan Atkinson as a cop.. and I love Blackadder, especially the one's with Hugh Laurie or Stephen Fry. Not sure if you've ever seen "The Comic Strip" (starring most of the Young Ones and several of their regulars) but it's definitely worth a look. Each episode is completely unique.. there's no format.

I love them! I especially love "Keeping Up Appearances" as well. How can you watch that and not crack up? I searched all over the US (stores, not online) until I found the complete set of Monty Python. Nothing beats the originals. Even the odd bits, like Douglas Adams "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is hysterical. They have a sense of comedic timing and farce that the US rarely approaches. Even when it is drama, it can be funny. My favorite line from a Brit Barrister is "She who will not be ignored!" What a great way to look at one's spouse. You are NOT alone! Even kids today who I have shown the classic Brit fare to love it!

It depends on the series. I love "Are you Being Served?" and "Dad's Army" is one of the funniest shows ever created. "Mulberry" and "Goodnight, Sweetheart" are nothing shy of brilliant, too. And my all time favorite would have to be "As Time Goes By."

But there are a few that drive me over the edge, too. The one about the superhero and his wife does nothing for me, and I could live without Hyacinth and the rest of the Bucket clan.

For the most part, though, I like Britcom a lot better than American comedy.

You are not alone. The Black Adder is among my top favorites. Fawlty Towers, the Young Ones-all great stuff!

American comedy is formulaic. You can see where the joke is going early on. They are so predictable it's like knowing how a magic trick is done and then having to see the same trick over and over. Seinfeld was a rare exception.

If you like classic british comedy, you might like Mr. Bean. I love Rowan Atkinson. He is great and very, very British when it comes to his comedy. I remember when his show was on PBS before Four Weddings and a Funeral.

It makes me laugh when we get movies in the US like Bridget Jones' diary which is played by an actress from TEXAS! What? TEXAS?!? With her fake British accent. She has no clue and the movie stinks. I can see that the person directing the film has a British background because of the music and some of the props. Otherwise...the movie is a waste of time.

There are nights when I turn on the BBC channel on Directv. They have some really great British shows on there. PBS is good for British comedy but it is very limited.

Sure, when you can make out what they are saying. Some of those British actors have such a heavy accent that I cant understand what they are saying. But I like shows like, Benny Hill, Mr. Bean, Monty Python, Black Adder, Are You Being Served.

Not at all. I recall fondly the Goodies, Father Dear Father, Doctor In the House, No, Honestly and Dad's Army. Great fun and dearly missed.
