Is 512mb really enough to run Vista Home Basic well?

Would I be better off buying another 512mb of memory or buying XP and loading that on to a new low-end laptop (that comes with Vista Home Basic) that I am considering buying? Price--low price is the key factor here. -Thanks

I suggest 2GB on your computer. Vista has been proven to work best with 1GB and the other 1GB is for efficient operation of your programs.

I think that is doubtful - Vista requires huge amounts of memory to run. The 'sweet spot' is about 2 GB. XP whilst not as all singing and dancing is very stable now and doesn't require that amount of memory. I use XP pro in one machine and it works fine on 448 MB. You need at least 1 GB to get Vista working I'd think.

i'm a MCSE and A+ tech and did beta attempting out for Vista, if its loaded with any edition of Vista, that's completly compliant, in application, hardware and memory. in case you're able to make it extra efficent, further memory is positive, and there are some side courses put in which would be became off, yet until eventually your optimistic with regard to the operation of the computing device, don't be deleting something. in case you have been to enhance to top classification or Small enterprise variations of Vista there are upgarded that could could accomplished, yet with laptops as apose to desktops you're constrained in what you're able to do.

No, you will need to figure that the Video memory is also using the same 512MB on a low end system. Go for at least one GB, that should get you by for awhile.

Yes, 512MB is just fine for Windows Vista Basic.

The problem isn't your hardware, it's your operating system. Vista is a dog and should be avoided at all costs. Stick with Windows XP or, better yet, switch to Linux.

Upgrade the RAM. You can get some pretty cheap off the web, don't upgrade through the company you're getting your laptop from. They'll charge a ton!

No, they recommend at least 1 gig. I would go for 2 gigs though. There is no such thing as too much memory.
