Evangelical Question: Is worshipping Jesus considered idolotry?

The ten commandments say that "you should have no other God before me." Yet Evangelicals say that the only way into heaven is to accept the lord Jesus as your savior. Why is worshipping Jesus not considered idolotry? You are worshipping someone other than God himself. He may be the alleged son of God, but that would be like ignoring a king's decree because a prince told you something different.

How do Evangelical's explain this contradiction? Please don't tell me that the bible is not meant to be taken literally, as a rational person I know this, lets assume I'm not rational though (aka Evangelical).

We believe in the Trinity, thus, God and Christ are both God. Try this verse on for size:

Phillipians 2: 5-8--"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Also, when the Apostle Thomas exclaimed, "My Lord and My God", Jesus did not rebuke him for calling Him his God, as he surely would have, had it been an improper inference. There were many occassions in Scripture where angels were on the verge of being worshipped and they told people, be careful not to do that. One example, would be the Apostle John when he was given his Revelation vision.

There's actually quite a bit more I could point out, but don't want to write a book. :)

Jesus IS God ... every bit as much as the Father and the Holy Spirit ... Jesus just happens to have a human body as well.

We know God as one, consisting of three divine, coequal and coeternal divine persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

And once Jesus became man, he also became the literal flesh image of a heavenly thing, easily identifiable as the one, true God by any Christian, and the old prohibitions against images soon ceased to apply.

We worship Father God through Jesus Christ our Savior because it it the blood of Jesus and His righteousness that gives us access to our Father. Mostly we worship what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

Jesus is God's Word in the Flesh. .

So in essence, you are still worshipping God.

we do not worship Jesus...we don't bow before a cross or wear one around our neck.

Jehovah God is the only spirit we worship. His son showed us the way to Jehovah and we follow him wherever he goes. He is the king of kings and the lord of lords but is still not above Jehovah.

Since Jesus is part of the trinity, it isn't idolatry, but praying to the cross as in many protestant churches, or worse, a cross with a statue of Jesus on it as in a Catholic church, is.

I'm surprised that when people wear a cross, God doesn't make it burn into their skin.

It is idolatry if you you worship Jesus but your not supposed too. You are only supposed to worship God only and believe in Jesus just for salvation. Jesus tells us he is not God (Mark 10:18

"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone.)

Well, kissing the crucifix, praying in front of the image of the crucifix, wearing the crucifix around your neck... it's all carven images, people.

    It's all idolatry.

Not to mention all the pictures of saints and Mary and all the paintings of "god" in renaissance chapels... As far as I know, you're not supposed to make pictures of god and worship any other beings... what about the worship of saints...?! Huh.

Not that I support Judaism, but this is one reason I do not believe Christianity. It is clear Jesus is not the son of their god.

  • Well... that's why we invent such constructs as the trinity.

I don't believe in the trinity.

Jesus is either YHWH himself or is a creation of YHWH.

I'm still studying it but I'm leaning towards creation, that is, YHWH's son and king.
