    Salaam Alaikum and hello

Naksh is the word for "abrogation". This is where one verse of the Qur'an is replaced or updated by another verse. It is important to remember that the Qur'an was revealed over the course of 23 years, and during that time the Muslims went from a small persecuted minority to an independent entity. Some rulings in the early days were changed as the nature of the Islamic lifestyle changed.

As an example, let's take alcohol. The pagan Arabs were very fond of alcohol and the new Muslims did not abandon it immediately. The first verses to be revealed about alcohol told the Muslims not to be intoxicated when they were approaching the prayer. Later, as the Muslims were stronger in faith and had abandoned many of the practices of the time of ignorance, the Qur'an revealed that alcohol was forbidden completely. This shows the great mercy of Allah, who in His perfect knowledge allowed the Muslims to adapt over time and not try to do everything at once. Had the verse making alcohol forbidden been revealed right away, many might have fallen into sin because they couldn't give up their favorite beverage right away.

This "abrogation" in no way implies that the verses abrogated were "incorrect" or "mistaken". They show the wisdom of revealing the Qur'an gradually and in stages, so the instructions could be learned and INSTITUTED in the daily lives of Muslims. Indeed, the early Muslims did not just learn all the verses by rote. They'd learn a verse, make a part of their lives, and then learn another. The Qur'an was a living entity to them, not just words blankly recited.

Hope that clears it up poe. And Allah knows best.

    Fi Aman Allah,

    Umm Abdel Hamid
