How harmful are doughnuts to alligators?

There is this alligator at my workplace (florida) in the lake and we throw doughnuts into his mouth everyday...he eats 20-55....he seems happy. And we have fun feeding him. He's not very violent and doesn't move around much...he just opens his mouth and we pile donuts in it.

Lately he looks really fat and slow....we were thinking about not feeding him anymore but afraid he will starve to death...will he survive?

If an alligator made it to be big, it knows how to find food. Alligators really don't need to eat very often anyway. It will probably find someone else to feed it.

Take it from me, you really shouldn't be feeding this alligator. Doughnuts may seem harmless for an alligator and it may also seem funny to some people to watch an alligator munch on doughnuts. But there are two serious problems that can result from people feeding him.

First, the alligator will become lethargic and overweight due to the doughnuts. If this feeding ritual continues, he will become overweight and will later suffer because of it. I work in a zoo and frequently observe what the zookeepers give to the two slender-snouted crocodiles for food. Not doughnuts.

Secondly, in the wild an alligator must really on its hunting skills to obtain food. If the alligator does have good hunting skills, it will be fine. However, if people continue to feed it, the alligator will begin to rely on humans for food. Also, the alligator may become increasingly bold when getting food from humans and may actually injure someone. This may sound silly to you, but animals have been known to do things like that ( i.e. squirrels, stray dogs, birds, etc.).

As for him being "fat and slow", he may be a bit old and other people besides you and your coworkers may be feeding him. To protect him, see if your local government can put up a sign telling people to not feed the alligators and to watch them when driving near that area.

    Best wishes,

DO NOT FEED HIM! He is a full grown animal, don't worry he'll manage to survive somehow. But, sugar is not even healthy even for dogs not to speak about alligators. Leave the animal alone, it is good u want to help, but better feed him with raw meat, like chicken or something like that, DOUGHNUTS ARE NOT HEALTHY for them. Lol, they r not healthy for people too. And, u said he's fat, when u stop feeding him, he'll lose weight, and start thinking of catching some meals himself. _

yes he will survive. alligators don't really eat much, but since you feed this alligator doughnuts, it may want more doughnuts. but then again don't feed it anymore it needs to find its own food, but if ur so worried about it, then feed it more.

I guess alligators will eat anything given to them! Donuts certainly not the best food for an alligator but apparently they are not giving him indigestion LOL!

Yes, it will survive. Alligators are wild they are not meant to be fed by people, they will survive on their own! You can stop feeding it doughnuts and it will survive!

Same thing happens to any creature who gets the easy life for a while. The get soft and squishy and fat and have trouble getting back into working. I dont think its going to let itself die, but either way its got plenty of stored energy right?

If you stop feeding him donuts he might start eating babies.

I say keep feeding him. The bigger he gets, the more cowboy boots he can be made into.
