Unnecessary startup programs?
I posted this a few minutes ago, but people didn't really read the question.
Let me start by saying...
I ALREADY KNOW ABOUT MSCONFIG
I ALREADY KNOW ABOUT MSCONFIG
I ALREADY KNOW ABOUT MSCONFIG

I ALREADY KNOW ABOUT MSCONFIG
Okay...
I'm often frustrated by the fact that my computer is slowed down by programs that are unneccesarily running in the background from the startup.
I KNOW THAT I CAN REMOVE PROGRAMS FROM THE STARTUP LIST, but certain applications (such as MSN Messenger, just one amongst many) add themselves to the startup list EVERY TIME I use them.
Is there any way that I can prevent this from happening so that I don't have to keep editing the startup list to prevent my laptop from spluttering to a halt?

Go into Tools -->Options-->General and uncheck "Automatically start at startup"
For other softwares go similarly into their respective Options tab and choose not to load at Start up.

If you’ve used a computer long enough, you probably have tens of little icons in your system tray (next to your system clock), that are an indication of all the apps that are currently running. Many of them may be programs that automatically add themselves to the startup process, or may simply be applications that you no longer actively use and may not need them to launch during startup any more.
It used to be easy to delete these apps simply by deleting their shortcuts from the “Startup” folder, but not all apps create a shortcut there, and many directly modify your Windows registry and add themselves to it.
So, if you want to remove programs that launch during startup (when you re-start your computer), here’s a handly little app called “StartupRun” that I use myself.
See this link for more details including a screenshot of the program.

Disable startup function in programs or use programs like "Chameleon Startup Manager".
It can automatically disable programs that added themselves to the startup.

REMOVE MSN MESSENGER
open msn messenger

preferences
uncheck:
1) run when windows starts
2) run in background
remove from taskbar:
right click start
select properties
select taskbar
select customize
now select to either always show or hide

Ok, use this Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4, I have this on my machine, it will prevent (ask/inform you) start-up programs repeatedly adding themselves to the registry........get it from here.......http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.... .......after you install that, you can see Spybot - SD Resident on your system tray which guards your registry.
If you are running XP, you can use Windows Defender either.
