I've been working at Sam's Club for the summer for the past two years, and they're basically the same company as Wal-mart. Last summer, they called me (not e-mailed) within a week, I did two interviews, then a drug screen, and then they called me to do my training. This year, I put my application in in April, said that I would be available to work more than two weeks from that day, went back in early June to tweek my application, and they called me back about a week later to do my two interviews (even though they already knew me), and drug screen. All their applications come in the same way, whether you fill them out at the store or online, so they all look the same too. They'll match their needs up to your application and call you if they need you. If you don't get a call in a few weeks, go back online to keep your application active for another sixty days.

The pay (at Sam's) is pretty good compared to other cashier jobs, and you get a lot of breaks (for an 7 - 8.5 hour shift you get two 15 minute breaks, and a 30 minute lunch break -- makes seven hour shifts go by pretty quick). The customers are not that fun because sometimes they treat you like an illiterate third class citizen, but there are some good ones too.

I do the hiring at a retail store and can offer some advice. First off, do NOT call the department manager. They don't do the hiring. The HR person is the one that initially scans all the applications and sorts them into "NO" and "maybe". The fastest way to get put in the "NO" file? Having poor availability. Stores are open 7 days a week, some 24 hours. Even if the store is only open 8 to 10, you can bet people are working before and after that. So when someone applies with Monday - Friday 8-4:30, I can guarantee you, you will go straight in the "no" pile. Requesting weekends off? They are the store's busiest times, and require most people to work them, not every weekend, but most. If you put you are available 'anytime', you will be called. Do not lie about a bad background, it will be found. Drug tests screenings also will reveal whether you are clean or not. So don't waste anyone's time if you can't pass both of those tests.

You can call the HR person, but give them at least a week to go thru all the hundreds of applications they get all the time.

In my experince, a company will call you with in a week, However pick up your phone call the walmart and ask to speek to the hiring manager for the dept you applied to ( Say automotive ect). Let them know your are still intrested in the position and would like too see when you might expect a phone call to set up the interview.
