Left Lane Hoggers!?

Today when driving on an empty highway at about 80mph I was in the left lane and pulled up behind a small Honda, I waited for the car to move out of the lane so I could make a safe pass, well this car would not move! I got a little closer and flashed once. The car decides to all of sudden Brake! This is crazy, the two lanes to the right were wide opened and this person thinks he has the right to just stay in the left lane and force me to make an illegal pass on the right. I HATE STUPID DRIVERS! Sure I was speeding but still, I should not have to make a pass on the right!

So who here has seen this problem themselves? Who here would be the one who brakes the person behind them because they want to pass?

When are people in the US going to learn LEFT LANE FOR PASSING!

Update:

I live in Florida, alot of people have guns in there car, sometimes I carry one too as it is legal in Florida. I did not tailgate him much at first, all I did was flash the guy to let him know I would like to pass, then he slams on his brakes? That is a bit uncalled for, that is when I got a little bit upset. ;)

Update 2:

80mph on a dry striaght lighted uncongested highway is dangerous? I drive a car with 330mm Brembo Brakes, a car which is made to be driven at 130mph on the autobauhn I dont classify 80mph as dangerous.

You're not supposed to pass on the right since you spend more time in a driver's blind spot. There's a reason that you're supposed to pass on the left. Its dangerous to pass on the right at 3am or 3pm and should be illegal everywhere (And it already is in a majority of places...even in the USA) because people exit to the right and merge from the right. It really is dangerous to pass on the right.

Another case of IDIOTS in a small Honda.Anyone that can answer your question will probably have all the answers to the birth of the cosmos, also.Just pass the dope on the right and lay on your horn.

Left lane hogs are a bit of a nuisance but you did admit to speeding. Not that too wrongs make a right, but I think had I been you I would have just signaled and went around him on the right.

Talking about the other guy, I would never 'brake' while in the left land simply because someone wants to pass. But I will admit to taking a little more time to overtake a vehicle on an expressway then I ordinarily would if someone is riding my rear bumper while I am doing it.

80MPH huh? I can tell from your profile you like air travel. But maybe you should keep the flying to the sky?

Seems as if you got very angry over a small inconvenience.

The person in the Honda did NOT make you angry...YOU let them make you angry.

Stop and think about how the situation made you feel and what good did it do. It only frustrated you and upset your day. What would have happened if you had just come up on the Honda pulled over to the right and passed and went on down the road at 80 mph? You would have felt better.

The Honda should have moved to the right lane, but YOU were the one that developed "road rage".....while the Honda driver just went happily on down the road. Live and learn. Work on that and good luck. Pops

  • The left lanes are passing lanes, not speeding lanes. You are still expected to do the speed limit in these lanes. They are for passing slow moving vehicles. ex. someone pulling a trailler. If they were doing the speed limit they were ok to be in that lane...sure it would be a good idea to be in one of the other lanes. I am one who trys to do the speed limit, normally with the use of cruse control. I used to do 10 - 15 mph over the limit but found it wasn't worth it. I'd rather leave 5 minutes early and not risk a ticket. I will most times get over if someone comes up behind me, but sometimes I am passing someone, normally people aren't willing to wait for me to get over and cut around me so I just stay where I am. I do hate when people tailgate and or flash me just because I'm doing the speed limit, but I wouldn't jam on the brakes. You say you 'hate stupid drivers'...but you tailgate, flash your lights at people and speed. All illegal things to do while driving, making me think you may be a "stupid driver" in this situation just as much as the one that was in front of you. When tailgated you should reduce following distance, but not instantlly, and you don't need to if knowone is in front of you. I say you where both wrong.

This is one of my pet peeves. Yes, left lane hogging is another, but I'm talking about what you did.

You feel it's safe to tailgate a vehicle going nearly 80 miles per hour, but it's not safe to pass it on the right. Where's the logic?

Besides, on a road with two or more lanes going in the same direction, passing on the right is not illegal. Following a vehicle too closely is highly illegal, regardless of what lane you're in.

The left lane should always be for passing and faster traffic. But in reality, you'll always encounter someone who doesn't know that or doesn't care. If it's clear, pass on the right and go on your way. It's legal, safer, and won't raise your blood pressure.

Yes, the left lane (..called the 'hammer lane' by truckers..) should be free of slower-moving traffic. But your intimidation of the Honda driver was foolish and dangerous, as was their sudden braking.

I've been in similar situations where I've been in the fast lane to pass slower cars to my right, only to have some hot dog come screaming up behind me and start tail gating. Instead of waiting the few seconds it would take me to complete my passing of the slow vehicles and get out of their way, these berserk, brain dead morons jeopardize lives.

Instead of braking, though, I just ease a bit farther to the left until my left-side tires are over the fog line and into all that gravel and other assorted crap usually lying there. A cloud of dust, trash and high-speed gravel smashing the front of his/her car usually gets the idiot to back off.

I feel your pain. Here, in the Midwest, I suspect there is a secret society promoting left lane hogging. Without any exaggeration, it is frequently faster to drive in the right lane.

I agree the left lane should be used for passing only; but you shouldn't try to intimidate the "lane hogger". If it was me in the Honda, I'd have hit the brakes, too, just to get you off my butt!

I wouldn't try that stunt in Texas; a lot of Texans carry guns...
