My 11 mth old Golden Retriever is dramatically shedding massive clumps of her thick coat...is that normal?

I mean....MASSIVE amounts. She is not scratching, she is perky and acting normal, and her nose is wet and cold. The only thing going on is the hair loss issue. When she is running in the yard, clumps of her thick coat are flying off her. It looks crazy so I am of course paranoid. When I pet her, I'm left with a handful of fur. However, there is a very much darker coat still remaining underneath, which is not as fluffy and soft, and kind of a bit wirey, but not mangey-like (I am pretty sure). I am hoping someone else's dog has gone through this...I guess to validate my simple explanation of "she is just losing her puppy coat." Anyone??

Goldens shed profusely. Really profusely. Use a shedding blade everyday and espect to see piles of fur come out everyday. All of them do it.

When you say shedding massive clumps of coat, providing she is not bald underneath and the skin is clean and healthy looking and not red and inflamed.

It might be an idea to take her to the vet and get her checked to make sure she doesn't have mange or any of the other range of skin infection. If that's all clear then your assessment that she is losing puppy coat is probably correct and if so the easiest way to get rid of loose coat is to blast it out with a dog dryer. If you don't have one of your own I'm sure that a local groomer will do it for you.

Another method I use to shift shedding hair is to Vacuum the dog. You can get a brush attachment that fits on the vacuum cleaner hose and literally allows you to remove the loose hair. My dogs love it and roll over for a brush as soon as the vacuum comes out!!

This is her first big shed if she's not spayed and she was in heat 3 or 4 months ago or even if she was spayed at that time. This is very normal. Brush out the dead hair you can get a rake it's like a comb but looks like a rake and gets all that dead hair out. You can also add olive oil about teaspoon or 2 to her food and that will help as well or put her on supplements. I use Show Stopper http://www.an-nat.com/ All the best;^)

Start brushing the coat out and see what the skin looks like under the new coat. If there are bald or red,dry patches definitely have a vet take a look. I suspect its normal shedding though.

Golden Retrievers are known to have thyroid issues. Getting an "adult" coat is natural; part of the growing up process and my golden did the same, but to the extend that you are describing, you should probably take her to the vet. Get her thyroid levels check and while your at it, do a full blood panel to make sure everything is working properly. Good luck!

Most dogs loose their puppy coat at about 11 months as long as there are no bold patches I don't think you have to worry. Dogs with longer coats tend to loose their coats in clumps when ever they molt in Spring and Autumn.

Chances are she is just losing her puppy coat. Our dog did the same thing at about 10 months. It makes sense that that the undercoat would be thicker and less soft than her puppy coat. Her fur might change color slightly too. If you are really concerned give you vet a call and get things checked out.

Well if she has bald spots then I would take her to the Vet! But if she is just loosing alot of hair then that is TOTALLY normal!!! It is summer and animals shed! They shed because they have so much hair so that makes them get HOT!! So I would just brush her the opposite way of the way that the hair goes, so basically brush her towards her head!! If that doesn't make any sense then just bruch her!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

That is normal. for a Golden....We also have a golden mix. doggy alsp .....Go to Petzmart or order a Furminator. online..the Furminator is a wonderful dog shedding helper.....We have three dogs that shed enormous amounts of hair in summer time every year all thru the summer months ...You will have to brush your doggy at least two times a week.....we brush our three doggies at least four times a week to keep up with the shedding of your doggies winter coat....The furminator will help you with that process then continue with a regular doggy brush...Hug your sweet golden doggy and enjoy her.... Hope this helped with your question...

Tho it's summer dogs tend to shed hair to keep cooler when hot weather comes ,Grows more hair when it gets cooler But if your dog is shedding more than it's suppose to take to the Vet it might be catching the MANGE.(Mange)Balding in spots along with dry skin .If your dog has this septum you need to fix it fast, Cause you can catch this as well(From your pet)
