It's the black licorice they are talking about that can can cause your uterus to start contracting. I believe you would have to eat a heck of a lot of the candy style licorice to have any issues.
I'd not over do on licorice tea or actually chew on a stick of licorice (my Gran brought some back from Germany, man is that good!!). However most of the licorice candy is artificially flavored. My favorites though (Dutch double salted) though is an absolute no no according to my Dr since the sodium levels are too high and it's made from real licorice.
Maybe the next time someone asks about inducing labor we should suggest real black licorice to see if it really works!

It is safe to eat liquorice when pregnant (but don't overdo it), and you did spell it correctly, for British spelling anyway.

Actually, there have been studies that show a connection between eating licorice and pre-term labor. I'm including the link. I'd just be careful not to over do it.

Yes. Licorice is a good for you. It helps you to maintain a normal body temperature. Don't over do it if it's of the salty kind. Otherwise, eat it as you would any other kinds of food.

Liquorice (black) can raise your blood pressure if you eat alot of it. So, ask your doctor.
Source(s): Had to lay off the liquorice because of high BP. - ?Lv 61 decade ago
As someone mentioned, true licorice has anise it it, which raises blood pressure. Too much can be quite unhealthy, but in moderation should be fine. Everything in moderation ;-)
congrats!

why would it be unsafe? as long as there is no liquor and you are talking about the candy licorice...just in small quantities...very small.
p.s. the British spelling is LIQUORICE the American spelling is LICORICE and they are both are correct!
