How much does a new roof cost?

It's a 1900 sq. ft. single story home on Sonoma County CA, Basic square shape, not very steep.

I'm young(ish) and plan to rip the old wood shingles off myself to save on costs.

I just need a basic ball park number.

Also, it noes not leak, but the wood shingles are curling upward and the house is starting to look line a pine cone. A friend told me it's "normal" and "does not need to be replaced... the shingles will flatten out in the winter with moisture." I'm afraid it's going to catch fire. (and it looks ugly) Who's right?

I would replace it. Across the street his roof did the same thing and he just put a new roof on his. We just had the cedar shacks removed from our roof and had a metal one installed. Cost us around $9000 (oregon) for the tear down, labor and material. We have almost 2000 square feet. The metal will last a long time.

Call a couple of roofing companies in your area. Three is always the magic number. They have to be competitive with one another so you should get a fairly reasonable estimate of the appropriate cost. Costs vary from one place to another so someone from the east coast (where I am) could not give you a real number even if I were a professional roofer. On that score USE A PRO for roofing. If you DIY a roof job and screw it up you will not know until rain drops are falling on your stereo... and that's just WAY too late!

10 foot by 10 foot is a square. You need 19 square replaced. Get a few estimates on what a contractor charges per square for the pitch roof you have and go from there. An estimate is usually free.

Well the roof is probably fine and your friend is probably right but I do think that the burning factor is real , and redoing it in shake shingles isn't going to change the fact that they are flammable.

What do you want to go for? Composition? Concrete Tile? Clay? Depends on the material you want...can be anything from 10,000 (cheaper compositions) to 20,000 dollars (if you go with concrete)
