why do people in the southern usa have such auniqe accent?

i dont know why we have that accent.... i guess our ancestors started it talking southern and we just carried it on

The accents in the southern part of the United States contain a variety of different influences. The region was historically settled by Ulster Scots (Scots-Irish), people from the West Country of England, Germans, the French, enslaved Africans, and other groups from Europe. Many of these groups, especially the Germans, lived in Pennsylvania or Maryland before they moved to the South. There were also Spanish groups present and various American Indian tribes.

Each group had an effect on the dialect, and like all other varieties of American and British English, it changed significantly over time. Of course, many areas of the South were isolated, and as a result, many of them have a very distinct dialect that may lack influences from some of the groups listed above.

I would say the West Country settlers, the Scots-Irish, the American Indians, and the Africans had the greatest impact on the dialect. In parts of Louisiana and Florida, you will see more French and Spanish influences, but it is not very common in the Upper South and in the Tidewater region. The German influence seems to be very light, if not almost extinct. Of course, there are a few areas in the state of Texas that still have strong German influences, but they came from individuals whom immigrated much later.

Humm, Yankees all over have very harsh accents. Take your pick, every place on earth has some accent. If it is not your own, then people usually find it annoying.
