Is the MRAP replacing all Humvees?

It seems to me that the Humvess are still cheaper and probably more fuel efficient and quite suitable for use on bases and in battle where IEDs are not being used.

Update:

I think if you are storming across the desert you run little risk of an IED strike. They are only effective if you place them in an area where there is a high likelihood of a humvee passing by withing a close enough range. AND like I said, general transport outside of a battlefield there is no need for an MRAP, which is really most useful in urban combat.

I think you've probably answered your own question, Troy. MRAPs make more sense on hard surfaces/roads, where IEDs are used. Humvees are still more desirable for their off-road capabilities, etc. Humvees are hardly fuel efficient, but they've been contracted for. As much as I think he's a shmuck, Rummy made a valid point about 'going to war with what you got'. Adjustments often need to be made, but you don't just throw the baby out with the bath water.

So, the shorter answer is: I doubt it.

(But then again, we are talking about the military, here.)

Humvees will be around for a long time before they are completely phases out. New contracts will probably be for MRAP's. Willey's Jeep was probably more fuel efficient than Humvees. Willey's could only go about 45 mph. But, around base and on dirt that's ok. But, then you have to support both with parts, etc.

  • MRAP's will only replace humvees in war zones. humvees will still be used in stateside bases

Where in the world will you find a battle that IED's couldn't or won't be used?
