I hope you have a fantastic day today, but as a non-American, I'm interested in hearing - how do you think past history is or will be affecting you today and in your future?

Update:

Hi Cornflake....I'm proud to be called an American of course I'd be proud if I was born in Austrailia or the UK. I support my country and what America stands for. Our Forefathers (rest in peace) came to this land because they wanted something different. A different form of Government. They weren't satisfied on the monarchy where they lived so they wanted to form a new government in a new land that would be for All People. This is why we ended up in war due to what their beliefs were in a new found land and how it was going to be run as a country. (Revolutionary War). Our Forefathers came together and wrote out the Constitution in which guidelines were going to be established and laws to establish a new form of Government. Freedom and Justice for All. I believe that our Forefathers brought to this new nation an ideal that was to help those who wasn't familiar with the word "Freedom" although we had another war which was the "Civil War" due to the individuals that believed Not All Men Were Created Equal". Abraham Lincoln our 16th President made sure that "All Men Were Created Equal" and not to be slaved no matter what your origin may have been. No man or woman or child should be a slave. This is what America was all about back then. America was a land for anyone who wanted to make it their home and to abide by the laws of the country and fight for what we believed and to support her no matter what. America the Beautiful! We have had some good Presidents and not so good Presidents just like any other country or monarchy. Some kings were better than others. But America is a strong country and We the People support her and defend her and we are proud to be called Americans. Now times have changed and I feel that some of the Laws that had been established in the 1700's didn't look towards the future to where some of these laws and amendments need an overhaul for today's era. These certain laws need to be re-evaluated and possibly be changed for the better. We also need more honest politicians that run for the seat in the White House to make sure that our Government is ran more sufficiently and honestly for the better of our country and the people.Unfortunately as of now, I feel that our Forefathers are probably turning over in their graves so do speak because of the corruption thats going on in our government today. It's sad. But hopefully with a new president maybe things will start shaping up for the better. I'm still proud to be an American. Our country despite hardships and bad reviews from other countries and their governments is still a good place to live and to raise a family.I would never leave my home. Happy fourth of July everyone!

Actually, a miles later date could be extra correct. We have a good time the date we declared independence, now not the date the Declaration was once truthfully ratified nor the date we truthfully won independence. We're taught to disregard the truth that we would have nonetheless misplaced the struggle after which stating our independence within the Revolution could were vain as we could have remained colonies of Britian. We're additionally incorrectly taught that the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration on July four, 1776, hence ratifing it on that date. Try August two, 1776, that is the exact date of ratification. In order for a record to truthfully be ratified the ones ratifying it ought to signal their names to it to make the ratification reputable, many of the delegates didn't signal till August second with handiest Hancock signing July 4th. But we needed to win the struggle so as to actually acquire our independence. That manner a date of October 19, 1781 while Cronwallis surrendered to Washington, bringing the struggle to an finish. Then you appear to September three, 1783 while the Treaty of Paris was once ratified, formally finishing the struggle and stating the colonies a brand new, unbiased country.

The only relevence in our country today for celebrating the 4th of July is for the economic impact to those that produce fireworks and run state parks. I see more childrens fingers being blown off, house fires, and alcohol related drownings on lakes as well as drunk drivers than I do any benefits.

Source(s): quit being a card carrying american and just be american.

I think some people actually do reflect on how fortunate we are to live in this country. I think like all our other holidays it's been commercialized. It seems selling the fireworks is more important than the day. However, I do know that there have been all sorts of things on TV reminding us of how our country was formed and the struggles the colonists went through to get freedom.

Part of me wants to say that today is great because we all get a day off from work, try and kill ourselves with fireworks and beer, and pretend to be patriotic today. But seeing how I am at work, not drinking, not playing with fireworks, and not acting patriotic that doesn't fit for me.

I am proud to be an American everyday of the week. I sing the National Anthem, I say the Pledge of Alliagence. I have a flag waving in my front yard. I am proud of our troops, present and past. I would be proud to have one of my sons in the military (scared shitless but proud). All today is for me is an excuse to party this weekend and get together with friends. But I show my true colors everyday of the week. It's kinda like the person that goes to church on sunday but then never acts christian like compared to the person that never attends church but is the most kind, compasionate, give person there it.

The date shouldn't matter to us Yanks. We should be proud and patriotic everyday of the week.
