Sorry, I know it's not quite on topic, but look into "Lightscribe", it's a fun little thing that let's you use a lightscribe cd rom and a lightscribe cd to burn a cover onto the cd itself. You simply put the disc in upside down and make your cover and it's on the disc forever :)
Very cool!

You're on the right track - it's time to ditch those old disc stickers - they are a pain and they cause your discs to be unbalanced.
You can either buy "Printable" CD & DVDs that are made for direct printing by feeding them into specially designed
printers. These printers feature a slot or feed for the discs and print full color directly on the disc surface.
Or, you can buy a "Lightscribe" DVD/CD drive and special lightscribe media that allows you to burn your image directly onto you CD/DVD by flipping it over and burning it with the same drive. This process is a little slow depending on quality selected and detail of the image. Also, it is only in grayscale, though different colored discs are available.

Shame only one person , besides me, read your question. What you want to do is print directly onto the disc? Yes it can be done, but it's expensive, you will need a special printer & discs.

You need software- but you don't necessarily need to buy it.
Try downloading Expressit. It's compatible with the mst common layouts of labels, and it costs you nowt. It's pretty good to use, too; lots of pre-set templates, or you can create your own from scratch.
