Eating out in San Antonio?

My wife & I moved to Ft. Worth last year & have fallen in LOVE w/ Texas! We want to see more of this great state so we are headed to San Antonio for our anniversary. What are the "don't miss this place!" restaurants in San Antonio. We are traveling on a budget but we could probably swing one expensive restaurant on our trip.

    I'd try the following:

    Pricey:

-Sazo's Latin Grill, Located at the Marriott Rivercenter

    http://www.sazoslatingrill.com/

    Cheap to Moderately Priced

-EZ's Brick Oven and Grill, Located at the Quarry Market (This place is delicious) Try the Alamo Bowl, its wonderful.

-Paloma Blanca, Located on Broadway in Alamo Heights

-Canyon Cafe, Located at the Quarry Market

-Picante Grill, Located on Broadway near Downtown

-La Focaccia, Located on Alamo St downtown

-The Barn Door, Located on N. New Braunfels @ Loop 410

-Paesanos, Located on Basse Rd, near the Quarry

    I'd stay away from:

-The Tower Restaurant, too many elevator problems 4 elevator rescuses this year alone. It just stops in the middle of the tower.

-Ruths Chris Steakhouse, Way over priced, I mean way over priced

-Piedras Negras, I've heard this place is flithy

I live in Austin and my family in San Antonio so I know the San Antonio restaurants pretty well.

The absolute most unique eatery in San Antonio and is a very suitable place for a couple celebrating their anniversary has to to none other then The Tower of the Americas. Take the elevator to the top and enjoy the ambiance of a rotating restaurant This would keep turning as you eat, I will add that this is both great during the day and it is also during the dark. During the day you can see for miles and at night you see all of the city and further, but the lights make it very romantic. It is well worth a few extra bucks. Happy Anniversary

My favorite expensive restaurant is Biga on the Banks. Its on the river walk. I have recommended it to many people and nobody has ever told me they had anything but a fabulous experience. Its a unique dining experience with spectacular food. I would avoid the Tower of the Americas. The food is over priced and mediocre. Ruth Chris Steakhouse is good, but you can eat there in Fort Worth. I would also recommend Liberty Bar if you don't want to blow a bundle. The food is good, they serve the best Cosmopolitan in town and the atmosphere is great! Enjoy San Antonio! I moved here from Fort Worth 5 and a half years ago and really love it!

You should go to Mexican Manhattan, it is a fantastic resturaunt and very affordable. Even though it is cheap it is fantastic!! It is a place where us locals go and it you are looking to get a taste of the san antonio life with lots of mexican food and culture it is the perfect spot. I don't recommend you going there for a romantic dinner because its a family place and because everyone loves it there, there is usually a line. But, it is family owned and has been here since 1958. you should go there when you are downtown it is right by the missions and not far from the riverwalk.

For a anniversary dinner go to the riverwalk which has many eateries right on the riverwalk and at night you should go and eat at one of them because it looks so beautiful and romantic lit up. Its perfect to celebrate an anniversary.

We went to San Antonio on vacation last year. The Texas Land and Cattle Steakhouse on the riverwalk is excellent. If you go, try the Jack Daniel's Pie for dessert. It's delicious.

It really depends on what part of town you are staying in. Your best bet would be to ask the hotel you are staying at for "local" suggestions. There are some great touristy places, but some even better local places. It will also depend on the type of food you are looking for.

There is a great place just outside of SA (towards New Braunfels) called The Vineyards. Great food, great wine and the atmosphere is really nice. It's off 3009 going towards Natural Bridge Caverns. http://www.thevineyards.org/

Source(s): been there and love it. live in SA

I highly recommend the Ruth Chris on Commerce Street. If you have the choice, eat upstairs. If you have to wait, to bar is very nice for pre dinner drinks. When I was stationed at Ft.Sam Houston, I would frequent the steak house. Although it is a little pricey, if you are looking to spend the money for a great mean, it is totally worth it!

Go down to the Riverwalk. There are plenty of restaurants to chose from that won't break your budget and you can have a romantic stroll down the riverwalk.

Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery -- they have a website. Best tex-mex in the state. Open 24hrs. By the old farmers market and started out feeding the farmers when they brought their produce in years ago.

  • we always go eat at "La Margarita" they have amazing food, and the best mariachi's I have ever heard - they staff is dressed authentically - right next door is an excellent mexican bakery ooohhhh makes me crave a pecan/cinnamon cookie just mentioning it !!!! it is located at market square which is a street blocked off to traffic, you can walk around with a daquiri/beer - there is outside vendors, and stages where there is always live performances (all free)along with "el mercado" an indoor market (next best thing to being in mexico!) it is just 2 minutes from the riverwalk, the alamo, etc so much to see and do in SA - have fun !!!
