Is this story about a mosque true?
A friend just told me that apparently a huge mosque - the biggest in the world - is going to be constructed somewhere in the UK. Does anyone know if this is true?

Tablighi Jamaat, an Islamic fundamentalist group which is being actively monitored by the FBI is planning to build the largest mosque in Britain. It will be built over three storeys and when complete will be Britain’s largest religious building, capable of holding 40,000 worshippers at a cost of The £100 M.
Alongside the giant mosque which will be just 500yrds from the Olympic Village in Stratford will be a complex of buildings including hotel style accommodation, a library and a school.

Figgy, Iona etc have the right answer. I live within 1/2 mile of the site, which is an old chemical factory by the River Lea in LB Newham. This Mosque is likely to be the biggest in Europe, with a final proposed capacity of 40,000.
The Islamic organisation who have made the proposal are Tablighi Jamaat, a worldwide fundamentalist organisation originating in India. Connections with more radical, Islamist organisations are widely rumoured, but remain just that.
My biggest concern, knowing the road layout in this part of London (which includes three major river crossings of the Lea) is the weekly grid-lock that would ensue every Friday lunchtime if anything like 40,000 worshipers tried to make their way there for prayers.

My take on this is that Obama only said they have the right to build the mosque/community center within the local laws and ordinances. He didn't question the "wisdom" of doing so. It's a couple of blocks away from GZ and I am against it. There are over 100 Mosques in NYC, why this one, why now? This a victory Mosque and a provocation in my opinion. @Lincoln6...Michael Bloomberg is not a Republican. He is a liberal independent, formerly a Democrat. I understand he has financial ties to the Middle East. I don't have a link for that but I do have one about him switching parties in 2007.

Yeah, it's true, and if the British government is not successful in opposing this project, they are looking down a long black tunnel where the separation of church and state will no longer be enough to keep people safe to worship without persecution. What I mean by this is that fundamentalists (be they Muslim or Christian) inherently believe that they are right and everybody else is wrong and they have a mission to force their way upon others. The separation of church and state in free democratic societies was engineered to prevent this kind of religious fascism. It will be a dark day if the pressure from one religion or another supercedes this extremely important (and essential) premise for all citizens of a country.

No I hadn't heard this - but there are enough mosques here spoiling the landscape already!
It is time the people who are native to this country had more say in these matters!
What is the point of having an electorate if their views aren't listened to?!
Does anyone know where the government website with the petition is?!

Yes it true, plans are to build it in East London, I do think under the current circumstance's that have been taken place in this country, it time for the government to put a stop to any more building of mosque, after all how many cleric's have stirred up racial hatred towards our country, surely its time for them to prove they want to be part of Britain, rather than try and turn their worshippers into suicide bombers !

They are talking about building one that will hold 40,000 and western intelligence sources are worried because of the groups responsible for the building have ties to terrorist groups. There already is one of the biggest mosques in the world in the UK holding 10,000 much more than any church or synagogue holds.

arghh stop annoying me!
I didnt know about it till I read this question. It is so annoying. What about hospitals? How many could be funded?
You know what, near me in Manchester there are plenty of mosques half built, where the building seems to have stopped due to lack of funds.
To be honest its getting on my nerves. They want free transport there and back too, if they are disabled.

Information on the mosque is here http://www.bnp.org.uk/news_detail.php?newsId=661
however, it doesn't appear to be the biggest in the world. That claim would be for the Shah Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Yes it is true, it's going to be built in London and will be the biggest landmark visible from the air for people flying in for the 2012 Olympics. Personally I consider this disgusting as taxpayers money is going to be used to help fund it when Christian churches have to beg for charity to repair buildings. There is a petition on the governement website to stop it, not that they will listen to us plebs who were born here to families that go back to saxon times of course, we don't count!
