....pirates from the Barbary Coast of North Africa.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbary_pirates
According to the historian Robert Davis between 1 million and 1.25 million Europeans were captured by pirates and sold as slaves during the 16th and 17th century. These slaves were captured mainly from seaside villages in Italy, Spain and Portugal, and from more distant places like France or England, the Netherlands, Ireland and even Iceland and North America.
On 20 June 1631 the entire village of Baltimore, County Cork, Ireland was kidnapped by Barbary Cosairs and sold into slavery in Algiers.

Should we in Britain demand an apology and restitution for these crimes against human rights from the King of Morroco and the Presidents of Algeria and Tunisia? Or should we seek it from Muslims in general?
11 AnswersOther - Politics & Government1 decade agoIs Respect a Busted Flush After Their Showing in the Ealing Southall Elections?
With all the debate about the relative performances of the major Parties. Has anyone noticed the dire performance of the Respect candidate in Ealing Southall with 588 votes or 1.9% of the popular vote. In a constituency with one of the most diverse populations in the country, with 43.3% being born abroad and a 13.3% Muslim population one would have thought that it was fertile ground for them. Has George Galloway and the Respect Unity Coalition reached its sell-by date? Or are the Muslims of Ealing a more sophisticated bunch than the naive Bengali's of Tower Hamlets. Perhaps they were concerned about what the prospect of a Respect MP would do to local house prices?
2 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWhat is really happening in Sedgefield now that Blair has gone?
There has been a great deal of commentary about whether David Cameron has failed to make a breakthrough, or if the Lib Dems have done anything but hold their own. However has anyone noticed that the British National Party has increased the extreme rights vote by a factor of 10, scoring just short of 2,500 votes or 9% of the poll, compared to the National Front's 253 votes in May 2005.
How many ethnic minority people are there in Sedgefield? Has there been trouble with Asylum Seekers or Migrant Workers? Is the BNP about to make the same sort of breakthrough as they did in the North West?

Deleted Answer: Without jumping to conclusions, it certainly looks as if there have been warnings of bombs, incendiary devices or contamination. The authorities are for the moment denying any terrorist connection. However Tesco makes an ideal target for Isl*mist terrorists: - they are Britain's leading Supermarket and an obvious economic target - Tesco was founded by the Jewish father of Lady Porter of Westminster and named after the tea he imported TE Stockwell and the first letters of his name COhen. - Tesco is already subject to an anti-Zionist boycott http://www.sunnahonline.com/ilm/jihaad/0004.htm - Tesco is at the heart of the public psyche, an attack on it is a terror attack on the British public en-mass. I have to say that Tesco's leading position also makes it a target for Animal Rights loonies; anti-Globalisation/ anti-Capitalism radicals; and any NIMBY organisation you care to name. Not forgetting any criminal blackmailers with a contaminated bag of monster munch. This....

1 AnswerOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoAfter the Attacks in the West End and Glasgow Airport; Are Muslims in Britain Still in a State of Denial?
Last month Channel 4 News commissioned an NOP survey into the Muslim community's attitudes towards the 'official narrative' surrounding the 7/7 bombings. This revealing that of 500 British Muslims:
59% of the 500 people polled believe that the government has not told the public the whole truth about the 7th July bombings.
A quarter of Muslims polled think the authorities were involved with staging the 7/7 London bombings.
52% believe that the British security services have "made up" evidence to convict terrorist suspects.
24% believe the four men identified as the July 7th bombers were not actually responsible for the attacks.
68% believe that the Muslim community does not bear any responsibility for the emergence of extremists willing to attack UK targets. Although 58% felt that the community should be doing more.

10 AnswersCurrent Events1 decade agoAre ALL the Anti-McCannista's envious, self-righteous, censorious Chavs?
What prompts this question are some of the answers to this McCann related question: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ai...
It seem to me that most of the negativity towards the McCanns is about them being "posh"; that Kate McCann is beautiful and elegant; that Gerry McCann is an articulate professional; they are both sucessful and respected doctors; that they have a stong and supportive family. Its almost as if some people are jealous and would happily let their kids be kidnapped in order to acheive the "fame" they perceive the McCanns as having. These are clearly people incapable of empathy, particularly for people who's lifestyles and ways of dealing with grief they can barely conceive of, let alone understand.
The McCanns took what at the time must have seemed an acceptable risk. The result of that mistake will live with them for the rest of their lives. Who do you really think you are to give your tuppenceworth?

Question: How can The Daily Mail get away with this?
Question Details: So what precisely are you objecting to? The idea that Islamists aka an Islamo-fascists might seek to murder their fellow citizens by blowing up a bus? "As if that could ever happen. Its almost as unlikely as four Islamists blowing themselves up on the Underground or elsewhere on London Transport, and two weeks later 4 more c*cking the whole thing up. As for seeking to commit mass murder at shopping centres and nightclubs with fertiliser bombs that's almost as fantastic as plotting to poison innumerable unbelievers with ricin. No doubt next week the D.Mail will reveal a plot to fly large airliners into tall buildings - how very dare they!" 2 of my girl-cousins were caught up in the dust storm on 9/11 and ended up in hospital. 2 of my friends only avoided being in the danger zone on 7/7 because they had been delayed earlier by disruption on the Northern Line. So don't talk to me about fear of Islam, or.....
6 AnswersCurrent Events1 decade agoMy Computer Will Not Switch Off By Itself. What Can the Problem Be?
I have a refurbished computer with 1.04Ghz AMD Athlon processor. It has 512Mb of RAM and runs using Windows XP. I have 40Gb. hard drive with 35% free space. I also have a 6Gb secondary drive and an 80Gb. extrenal drive.
I have the Microsoft Windows firewall running, also fully up to date Norton/Symantech and Spybot anti-spywear.
About 4 weeks ago I upgraded from dial-up to TalkTalk broadband. This works more or less smoothly, but increasingly I find it impossible to power down the computer. This occurs whether I have the modem switched on or not and wether I am switching off or "re-booting. I usually closes part of the way before freezing. I then have to switch off using the power button. My understanding is that this is damaging the hard-drive. Anyone any idea what the problem is and if their is a patch or upgrade to deal with the problem? Thank you for your assistance.
