A county jail is used to house "minor" criminals, such as, someone who has had too many DUIs, some drug criminal, and people like that. They also hold prisoners who are being transfered to the Fed - Pin. Federal hold the "harder" criminals. Murders, rapist, and so on. Fed also is more secure.

County is a jail, federal is a prison. jail is not for a long term stay, people do their small amount of time and or get transferred to prison. In my county, you cant spend more than 2 years in county jail. of course federal prison you can do an unlimited amout of time.

federal prison is a country club compared to county jail, I know people been in both and I visited each, county jails are run by counties of each state or city/federal run by feds they have own cell, cable tv, caferterias, hot plates in cells etc some even have apt size refrigs, they can have a lot more stuff in federal can call home and receive phone calls from outside. numbers for phone in block like a college dorm more than jail.

County Jails are for those who are awaiting trial on their charges and cannot make bond and sentenced inmates on misdemeanors and low felonies. State prisons are for sentenced inmates (felonies only in Indiana). Also occasionally the state prisons will house a pre-trial detainee for a county if that county has inadequate facilities to hold the detainee. (expensive)

Federal prisons are for sentenced inmates on federal crimes only. (taxes, firearms, etc..)

Jail is shorter term sentences. Prison is longer. That's the main difference. So your friend is right.
