Why do Jews place stones on peoples' graves?

Answer

We are taught that it is an act of ultimate kindness and respect to bury someone and place a marker at the site. After a person is buried, of course, we can no longer participate in burying them. However, even if a tombstone has been erected, we can participate in the mitzvah of making a marker at a grave, by adding to the stone. Therefore, customarily, we place stones on top of a gravestone whenever we visit to indicate our participation in the mitzvah of erecting a tombstone, even if only in a more symbolic way.

When Willow put stones on Tara's gravestone, I always assumed it was a Wicca thing. (Yes, big time Buffy fan here.)

I had forgotten about Schinldler's List having that, too.

The "why" part.

However, it would have been better if you had explained up-front that you knew it was a respect thing, but asked for why it's considered respectful.

But still.

it incredibly is genuine. The action picture confirmed Schindler's grave. Stones are a thank you to coach understand. to coach in a seen way that somebody became there who cared and that the deceased meant some thing it incredibly is tangible. flora wilt and die yet rocks are eternal as is the affection and/or understand which you have for the deceased. i'm Jewish and that i think of it incredibly is an exquisite custom myself.

It's a traditional way of showing respect and remembrance, especially for the dead.

If you recall in the Bible, the original "Mizpah" was a pile of stones built by Jacob and Laban as a remembrance between them.

its something to the effect of that flowers are fleeting and wilt and fade too quickly, where stones are much more constant and so on.
