Why are churches obsessed with homosexuality?

In a world where we have-

- Millions needlessly dying of starvation, AIDS, and diseases every year

- Rampant drug abuse and violence in our homes, schools, and neighborhoods

- Half a dozen bloody civil wars, "allies" that don't believe in basic human rights, and terrorist states that are in the process of acquiring WMD's

- Millions of kids growing up in third-world orphanages, with no access to basic health care, nutritious food, or any hope of a "normal" life

- Millions of kids with no health insurance, even as the Family groups sue governments and threaten boycotts to try to take it away from yet more families

Why do churches and "family" groups devote so much more of their time and resources to punishing people for who they love, and their families, than to relieving some of the pain and suffering in the world? How many thousands of lives could have been saved just with what has been spent "protecting" marriage from those that actually value it enough to fight for it?

Update:

James O- Catholic Social Services receives very little of its funding from the Catholic Church itself; most of it comes from public subsidies- i.e. the taxpayers- and from direct donations.

oh my god i totally agree with you.. i'm a devout catholic but i still find some things to be quite hilarious. My teacher once told us that "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and STEVE" hahahaha

i dont support gay marriages but i think there is really more to just being good, absolving from sin and stuff. There is such thing as "lesser evil" . Considering other crisis going on, being gay is not a BIG problem.

oh, and did you know that the catholic church does not approve artificial forms of contraceptions? that includes withdrawal, condoms, pills, etc.

That pretty much explains everything else.

Churches and "family" groups, as you have stated, do invest their time in all of those things. Anyone who has attended a church knows first hand that they are dedicated to all of those causes, and more. We do as we are called upon by God to do, and that includes devoting our time to the salvation of others as well as ourselves.

My question is, if you truly believe it is a waste of resources for these religious groups to work on things that are conducive to protecting the sanctity of marriage, why are you wasting your time and resources fighting against it? Why aren't you instead out curing AIDS, fighting drug abuse, helping orphans and third world countries, and fighting the healthcare system? Wouldn't that be a better use of your time?

Finally, there is no need to solely criticize churches or religious groups of any kind for their stand on homosexuality. There are plenty of non-religious out there who disagree with it, and protest it as well.

where on earth have you gone to church!? The reason we make a big deal of it is because the homosexuals rub it in christians faces and say look how we can do what we want there is no God OF COURSE christians will get mad and fight if the world wasnt so big on making something acceptable we wouldnt even notice but in a church maybe once or twice a year will the sermon be on homosexuality a lot of times in youth groups it's about helping the needy, saving sex for marriage, and alchohol & drugs. You obviously have not been into a church they donate a lot of money and time to help those in need and I have participated in helping those!

    exactly, yes! (to user above)

one is linked to the other. and also one sins causes many other sins. why do you compare them? all of them are sins. all of them should be healed.

the christian churches have especially that problem with hs because their background is patriarchaic. that means fear of women and in consequence fear of flesh and sexuality. but the material world is anyway and eternally hosted by our great mother divine. homosexuality comes up, when our natural divine sexuality, which is possibl between man and woman only, is getting distorted by political ambitions. and here we are now. it has become a political issue. originally it has been the most natural thing of the whole world, and no sin at all in sight.

  • Boredom I guess. It's such a hot topic but there are many other things to focus on than just that for sure!

because most christian organizations are EVIL

and the poor sheep who follow them aren't really all there

thus we end up with focusing on something that the creator(nature, god or whatever) intended and calling it bad

plus they can't talk bad about the other minorities without getting into lots of trouble nowadays

What? You think churches can only do one thing at a time?!? The fact that you say "punishing" when it's hardly that shows you're just trolling.

Because these days it is a common subject in any circle. Churches focus on society issues. These issues include anything that can cause mental or physical turmoil, causing a person to lose their spirituality which is a major part of our human makeup - physical, mental, emotional & spirituality.

hello, churches and christians try to help that, but the churches being obsessed with homosexuality has been overexaggerated by the media so much that the help that so many churches give to those pieces of chaos is lost in translation.

Maybe if there was a little less sinning these massive social problems would ease up a little
