How do I trap a rattlesnake?

Here several ways to dispose of the snake

1) Shoot it with a shotgun 20 gauge preferry Because " The only good snake is a dead one "

2) Move away and leave the snake

3) Go to the library and read a book on trapping snakes

4) Buy a long pole with a wire loop at one end just make sure the wire loop has enought wire for to tighten the loop after you put the loop over the snake head

5) Buy a fine mesh wire trap ( the mesh has to be small enough to keep the snake from going through) , bait the trap with what ever the snake eats rabbit , frogs , rats ,mice ,etc

just make sure it Alive cause a snake will not eat dead meat

Rattlesnake Trap

Perhaps I missed something, but I thought you asked how to "trap a rattlesnake." If that's true, I'm curious why all your answers end up with shooting the poor snake.

Diamondbacks love good old warm blooded rodents...a nice field mouse for example. Put a live mouse as bait in a spring trap cage used to catch things alive. Your local animal control agency might have a trap they can loan or rent to you. I'd put the trap just outside from under the house.

Make sure the mouse is unable to get out of the trap; wouldn't do to have mice under the house too. Some pet stores carry mice for sale if you don't have field mice you could trap and use around the house.

When the D-back gets hungry enough (this may take a few days), it should go after the mouse and...wham...get caught in the trap. Take the trapped snake far far away and let him go; so it can control those field mice and other critters in the wild.

The safest and most effective way to trap a rattlesnake is use a pit trap. A pit trap consists of a hole with straight sides and a container in the bottom of the hole. Plastic storage boxes that have a lid that snaps shut work well. Make sure the container has at least a foot or more in depth. Dig the pit trap as close as you can a place where the snake is likely to travel. Next, use a live trap to catch a mouse, and then put the mouse in the pit trap -- its best to put the mouse in the trap in early evening. Live traps for mice are sold at many hardware stores. After you catch the snake, drop the container lid on top of the container, push the lid into place with a stick, and snap the lid shut. Then dump the snake somewhere where it won't cause any problems.

Well, it isn't easy, but you can do it the way people have done it for hundreds of years - go in after it!

Now, wait a minute, it is not that bad. A rattler has a device that tells you where it is.

You load up your .12ga with a slug barrel and birdshot, and then get in under the house making plenty of noise. The snake will start to rattle when you get about 4 feet from it (beyonedit's striking range), and you just shoot it.

A snake only needs to eat about once a week, so trying to tempt it with food will not work - you have to go in after it.

Better would be to get a neighbor and go in together, not far apart - then the snake will be on one side of the other.

If the length of a .12ga worries you, then if you have a pair of .38 pistols, get some shot-shells (you can get them for a .38 - but NOT for an auto - it must be a revolver!) from the local trading post and go hunting. The snake does you a favor and tells you where it is. Rattlers can't hear, so pound on the ground and rustle around (they feel vibrations), and let him "see" you.

If you are so inclined, then you can eat it.

You gotta get in there, lady. It ain't that dangerous - really....

Well, firstly I suggest that if you are not experienced you leave it to a professional.

That being said, a .38 with snake shot rounds should take care of the problem, but you need to be really careful not to shoot a hole in your floor or catch a ricochet in the face. Make sure nobody is in the house if you use this option.

You might also consider taking a long hollow tube and tying a string to the end. Then pass the string through the tube so you have a loop at the end that you can pull *very* snug by tugging the end of the string hanging out the bottom of the pole. However, remember once you catch the critter with such a device you will then have to deal with it, and he ain't going to be happy!

We have a diamondback rattlesnake under our house that bit two of my dogs, and almost bit my husband two nights before. We live 50 miles from town so can't get anyone out to remove it for us. How do we trap it or lure it out so we can dispose of it?

If you have a portable electric fan with a long cable, place the fan so it blows under the house towards the snake. The snake will move eventually away from the draft. When it comes out from under the house, steer it away from the property, still using the fan and keeping a healthy distance between you and the snake. Don't for heavens sake start blasting away with shotguns or the like - you will probably only damage your house or kill someone.

Even snakes have a right to live and they do eat rats, mice, and other rodents, so they're not all bad. Sorry about your dogs, but they should have known better.

If you are not afraid of snakes, and you have a steady hand, you can use a long grabbing tool. But make sure that it has a VERY tight grip, not one of those cheap versions. (It should be able to at least grip and hold onto a can of food.) Use this tool to grasp the snake just behind the head, and DO NOT LET GO.

Dispose of the snake by putting it in a pillowcase, and either placing it (alive or dead) in the regular trash for pickup, or by calling animal control, or some other means.
