Cat had a fit and died any one know why?
My dad's cat had a fit yesterday, started drooling really heavily, and mewing pathetically. Within half an hour, he quietly died in my step-mum's arms.
The vet has offered an autopsy, but it's very expensive, and won't do Olli any good now.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? or any professionals care to hazard a guess?
I live in th UK, we don't have rabies.
And he was two and a half.
He'd been inside, with no poisons present.

I am so sorry for the loss of you fathers cat and so young. No wonder the vet wanted to go ahead with an autopsy.
You have many answers and some of them from very concerned and sympathetic people.
I wont try to give you an answer, you can drive yourself mad trying to guess what it was and you'll never be sure. If your father has another cat I would have been tempted to find out if it was some kind of poisoning or virus in order to protect the other one.
However, sadly he' s gone now and your father needs to grieve the loss of his beloved pet.
Perhaps in time he will remember his cat the way he was before. this happened in happier times.
My deepest heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and your dad for your loss. Its very hard when one so young leaves us.
God bless you all

My first thought would be a seizure of some kind that caused his body temp to rise to high and eventually caused his death. Thats just my guess. The only way to be sure is to have a necropsy done. I'm sorry for the loss of your cat. My cats name is also Olli short for Oliver. I hope you get some definete answers to your question. Good luck
Note: It wasn't rabies. You would have seen changes in his behaviour long before this episode and Rabies doesn't kill in a day. So unless there was major changes in his behaviour over the last week or so it wasn't rabies.

Cats are curious creatures by nature - and many things that are dangerous to them look awfully yummy and are hard to resist. Poisons like antifreeze and pesticides are common and cause death quickly, often after seizures and heavy drooling. A close friend of mine just lost her cat the same way and it was determined that there was some slug & snail bait that had spilled out on the floor of the garage.
I am very sorry for your parents' loss.

My cat died in my arms with a fit when I tried to take him to the vet because he was sick. The vet offered an autopsy too, but he said it was pointless. The cat was old and ill, and being outside scared him literally to death. He was an inside cat and had never been outside. The vet said it was a stroke or heart attack or something like that but paying for an expensive autopsy wouldn't help me with anything.

Hi! I didn't experience any fatalities, but I had a dog, a cat, and a ferret all have seizures over the course of one summer. Thousands of dollars of tests later, someone suggested I test my apartment. I lived in an old house and sure enough: LEAD PAINT! It was flaking and apparently got into water dishes or else was breathed in by the animals- their noses are nearer to the walls and floor. The inspector said levels might be toxic enough for a baby! Needless to say, contacted landlord and he had all the old paint removed and replaced. The animals never seizured again.
If you're positive it's not lead paint in your home, it might also be asbestos, radon, or some other home contaminant that has built up to the point where it killed your cat.
I am sorry for your loss. I'm also sorry for the inconvienience, but you might want to order a home inspection- especially if you have children.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat. Since your Dad's cat died so quickly, I would think that it could have been a poisoning...even though you say that there were no poisons present. One of our cats died of a heart attack (we believe, since there was no autopsy), but he fell asleep. There were no signs that he went into convulsions. My Dad was in the room with him...the cat went to sleep...and never woke up. The cat had been diagnosed with a heart murmur.

I'm sorry this happened. Was the cat old? It's body may have just shut down. That is how my cat died. Started drooling and couldn't move at all, then we took her in to the vet and had her put to sleep. It could have been kidney or liver failure.

Sounds very much like a seizure and happens more in cats - I had one to do the same and our vet said that was the cause- sometimes they can get treatment but in a severe seizure - it usually is fatal- I am sorry for your loss and unless the cat was around chemicals (poison) it sounds like it was a seizure.

if your sure he wasnt into some poison i would say spre the expense and get a new cat after a while
cats are very good at hiding thier illness and though they are tough critters, they do have problems just like any one else
Im sorry to hear about him and I hope the sadness quickly
passes and you will rember him with affection

My mom's cat died a few months ago, she was 19 years old,. She had a fit and started trembling, then died in my dad's arms. It was a very sad day. We think her heart failed because she was very old and had slowed down a great deal in the last months of her life.
You didn't say how old the cat was...
