I think you have the right tools.

Make sure your anti-virus and spyware protection is updated. (I suspect that Spybot ultimately will do the job...if used as per below.)

Turn off System Restore (right-click My Computer, choose Properties, then System Restore tab) and restart in safe mode (F8 while restarting).

Run full-system scans, spyware and virus.

Restart your computer. If clean (and I think it will be), turn System Restore back on.

Spybot (and most spyware detection and removal tools) cannot fully rid your system of something that had embedded it in your registry (startup procedures). So, Spybot finds it, says its fixed, but it returns when you restart your computer.

Turning off System Restore and cleaning it in safe mode will get it out of your "settings" hence it should not reappear.

After you have cleaned out this nasty thing, you might also want to clean your registry or have a pro (or knowledgeable friend) do it. You can use CCleaner (free; the "issues" item on the menu) and if you do, make sure to say yes when promtped for whether to make a backup copy before it cleans out the many problems it will find.

These are a few FREE programs, which work great together to check whether your computer is infected, if anything is found they will remove the problem files. Make sure to disable your own Anti-virus before installing a new one because it may cause a conflict.

    Download the following:

Windows Defender - Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. Make sure to download all of the newest updates before scanning.

If you don’t want to disable or uninstall your own Anti-Virus program then you can try these free online scanners.

This one is great for trojans

Kaspersky is another great and trusted virus scanner.

    AVG Anti-Virus Free - http://free.grisoft.com/

Make sure to disable your own Anti-virus before installing a new one because it may cause a conflict. Make sure to download all of the newest updates before scanning.

To prevent future problems download SpywareBlaster and update it, make sure to enable all protection.
