Should I have tipped my mechanic?
I had a minor problem with my car and took it to the dealership this morning. It turned out to be even more minor than I thought and required only a little lubrication on the parking brake. It took about five minutes. I asked the cashier if there was a charge and he said no but you can tip the mechanic. So I looked at the mechanic and he shook his head and waved me off. I thought the cashier was kidding. I never heard of tipping a mechanic, so I just thanked them and left. I thought the dealerships paid mechanics well. Should I have given him a tip and if so how much?

I would never tip a mechanic at a dealership, or anywhere, for that matter. They make good money and you don't/won't know the results of their 'service' until long after you have left. I tip waitresses and such because I can see the quality of their service while I'm eating, not so with a mechanic. In most cases you are not even allowed to see them do their work.

Since he lubed your parking break you could have lubed his.....LOL, nevermind. It would have been a nice gesture to tip him, but he will get his reward when he gets return business and you tell others about him. An honest mechanic is hard to find and it seems you found one.
