If Mormons are Christians are Christians Mormon?
Nearly (not all) Mormons I've spoken with claim the title of 'Christian' under the technical distinction that they follow Christ. A few have stated that this distinction is purely technical because the Christ they follow is different in essence and nature than the Christ of traditional, conservative, evangelical Christianity and even of semi-liberal or Catholic Christianity. Since there is no debate that the way groups who call themselves Christians define the Jesus they serve differently (Jehovah's Witnesses define Jesus as non-diety, Mormons define Jesus as diety but one of many (polytheism), traditional Christianity defines Jesus as diety but in a monotheistic sense, and the United Pentecostal Church defines Jesus as diety but in a modalistic sense), my questions are:
1) If Mormons are Christians are Christians Mormon? Why or why not?
2) Should the title a group uses to describe itself be based solely on technical definition or logical distinction? Why or why not?

Mormons are not true Christians. Additionally, Christianity can not be based solely on technical definition or logical distinction. In other words, God is who HE says He is and not what human beings falsely interpret Him to be. The bible is pretty strait forward in the way it explains the characteristics of God and the way to heaven. There is no other way to explain or interpret it other than the way it is written.
2 John 1:10 "If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him." Any so called Christian denomination that does not teach the bible in context just the way it is written is teaching a false doctrine and leading people to hell. So study the religions of the Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses and so on. If Jesus Christ isn't the Son of God, Lord, Savior, and God also then they teach a false doctrine!

Yes. Only if you are defining a Christian or a Mormon as someone who does the will of the father. If one is a Mormon but doesn't do the will of the Father, than they are not Christian, and vica verca. If someone (truly) does the will of the Father, they will, once they here about the restored gospel, join the Church, and become a mormon (member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints), if they have not done so already, whether in this life or the next. So, in a sense, all who have a broken heart and a contrite sprit and put away the natural man, will be led to the truth by the Sprit of God, and will in time become a Mormon as you put it. A true Christian will eventually be led to the Mormon church, where they can recieve ordiances through the power of God, which has only been authorized through servents in his Church. The Lord loves you all.

1) If Chihuahuas are dogs, are dogs Chihuahuas? All Chihuahuas are dogs, but not all dogs are Chihuahuas. Now, some don't consider Chihuahuas to be dogs- they're more like rats that bark...
2) Depends- if Canis Familiaris is good enough for everything between Bethoven and TacoBell... then I think Christian should be good enough for every thing from Catholic to JW and LDS....
There's lots of kinds of Christians out there- I've found that there's three main categories.
Catholics are based out of Rome, and teach that Jesus gave leadership of His church to Peter, and the Catholic Church was born through that authority.
Protestants (of which there's also many different kinds- Lutherans, Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, Episcopal, Anglican, etc...) teach that although Jesus gave leadership of His church to Peter, something was lost along the way. They feel that the Catholic Church isn't quite correct.
There are also a number of "other" denominations- Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, and various evangelical groups.
There are many differences between all these groups. Some teach that the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost are one being (Trinity), some don't. Some teach that works are needed along with grace/faith for salvation, some teach that faith or grace alone is needed.....
But there is one thing all these churches agree on- That without Jesus Christ as Savior, NOBODY will get to heaven.
I feel this is the essence of Christianity- the belief and faith in Jesus saving sacrifice, the commitment to live according to His teachings.

Christians are not Mormon,
this is the definition of a christian:
Chris·tian /ˈkrɪstʃən/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[kris-chuhn] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective 1. of, pertaining to, or derived from Jesus Christ or His teachings: a Christian faith.
2. of, pertaining to, believing in, or belonging to the religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ: Spain is a Christian country.
Mormons are Christian for these reasons. Christian is just a generalized term that is used instead of naming each group individually, Like, Baptist, Methodist, Evangelist and so forth. All are Christian, but at the same time we all practice our own beliefs differently.
It is true that not all Mormons are Christian because there are people who claim to be Mormon but dont follow the teachings of Christ. Those who claim to be Mormon and follow the teachings of Christ by definition are Christians. This statement can apply to other religions as well and not just Mormons. For example, just because a person claims to be a Baptist doesn't mean that they are Christian, they actually have to follow the teachings of Christ.
I hope this helps
We use the King James version of the Bible and follow Christs teachings from it and the Book of Mormon.
This is our first article of Faith:
We believe in God the Eternal Father and in his son Jesus Christ and in the Holy Ghost.
"Mormons" didn't choose that name it was given to us by all of those in the early days that hated us. We are Latter Day Saints. The name of the church is The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints.

IMO Mormons are Christians, but not all Christians are Mormon. This is based on the fact that there are other beliefs and "rules" that make up being Mormon. Under this basis the title of a group should be based on logical distinction. Same can be said for any Christian religion. Its like an outline. Christian comes first, subtitles are Mormon, Catholic, Jehovah's Witness....etc.

Mormons Vs. Christians? Let's get ready to Rummmmble!!!! Are Mormons Christian? They truly think they are, but then again, magic underwear?? really??? Do mormons think they are the only true church? Oh yes, but then so do Evangelicals, United, Baptist, Presbyterians, and on and on and on. Zealotry, from any one sect is still distasteful. Now, to your original line, Mormons Vs. Christians, that would be something I'd watch on Pay Per View.

From my point of view we cannot and should not judge if Mormons are Christians or not. There are many religions in the world and there are many people in the world that do not even know the name of Jesus Christ. A Christian is a person who strives to live a life such as Jesus lived. If we study the Bible and study the life Jesus Christ as recorded in the new testament there are some things or fruits that indicate if we are a true christian or not.
#1- Do I believe that God the Father is God? Do I have faith in him?
#2 Do I believe that God sent his Son into the world to save me from my sins? Do I have faith that Jesus Christ can take my sins away?
#3 If I have faith in Christ then what can I do to be saved?
-After faith comes repentance- Acts 2:37-38 KJV.
-After repentance come baptism- also see Mark 16:15-16, John 3:3-5.
-After baptism we receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost- Acts 2:38 which is the gift to discern truth from falsehood. John 15:26 and John 16:13.
- After Baptism we must continue the repentance process on a daily basis so that we can have the gift of the Holy ghost to remain with us for continual discernment. Being saved is not a judgment we can make- that judgement will be made by the Great Creator of all things and when that day comes and if we have followed the example and teachings of Christ to the best of our ability, I beleive that our faithfulness will save us. But if we lack the works of Christ in our actions following our faith then our faith is dead- James 2:14-26.
One can claim to be a Christain only after his or her fruits/ works by faith has shown that of the works and fruits of Jesus Christ himself. I strive to be more and more like Christ but yet I still fall short. Anyone, whether they be Baptist, Assembly of God, Catholic, Mormon, Methodist, etc... that does the above and progesses to become more like Christ day after day in my book is a true Christian.
Just a thought- there was a time when only one religion existed and truth was not something that was debated- how great it would have been to live on the earth during that time.
John 14:6- Jesus saith unto him (Thomas), I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

It terms of religion that has many subcategories and each having it's own set of rules and unqiue distinctions to it's sister religions, you can't logically chain them together. It's not so simple as A+B=C, therefore A=C, it's far more complicated than that because religion isn't always logical, actually it's abstract for the most part.
Historically speaking, Catholcism was the first Christian faith, therefore making it the archetype to all those that be established later. Catholics believe that a man called Jesus came to earth to save Man from damnation and to "open" the gates of heaven for Man after his crucifixion. They also believe that Jesus is a third of a whole God, meaning that there are three persons in one God. These fundamental beliefs are unique to Catholicism, no other variation of Christianity believes this to be true, rather believe Jesus was simply a good man, or he was a prophet, but none regard Jesus in the same way as Catholics, making Catholicism completely isolated in this aspect. Mormons don't have any thing close to these beliefs, and though others may disagree with these Catholic beliefs, Mormons are further than any other.
But more to the point, Mormons have ideas that may have many Christian elements to it's doctrine, but it is isolated from Christianity because of their off beats ideas and doctrine. They also have a completely different Bible, whereas the rest of Christian beliefs have the same Bible for the most part, although there are some fundamental distinctions seen as well.
Mormons regard themselves as Christians because they do believe in the same God called Christ. If you look at the religion demographically, you would see Mormons counted as Christians, but for those who practice Christianity, there could be some disagreement. So are Mormons Christians? It really depends on whom you ask, because the facts can be applied and interpreted differently to fit a certain bias.
Like I said earlier, you can't apply logic to the rationale for religion, since religion doesn't make since logically and therefore why faith is such an important aspect in religion, especially Christianity. Reasonably speaking religions should distinguish themselves by their doctrine in order to avoid confusion and to keep things on an even keel for their adherents. But just like a German Shepard and a Dalmatian can both claim to be dog and no one would disagree with them, but when you label things and place them in subcategories, then there's a distinction. You won’t find two different breeds of dog sharing the same kennel, just like you wouldn’t find two different forms of Christianity sharing the same church.

Well Lonnie,
I look at it this way they all believe in Jesus Christ or Jesus of Nazarith, globally the same.
1) a) Yes, Mormans are Christians.
b) No, not all Christians are Mormans because the way they practice their religion is different. And not all Chrisitians believe in all the Morman Profets.
2) I dont know of another way of defining a group.

Mormon's are christian, but only in the sense that they claim Christ as their leader. That sounds funny the way I said that, but what I mean is that they follow a different Christ than the mainstream christian church does.
It's kind of arrogant to say that they are not christian when they themselves proclaim Christ - the point is to decide if their version of Christ is sufficient different from the Christ of the New Testament. I say it is .. profoundly different and in error.

First off, I'm not a Christian, so I am answering this from that point of view. I've always viewed the definition of Christianity as one who accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior and who follows his teachings. I think LDS/Mormons fall under their canopy. Of course not all Christians are Mormons. It's like all Texans are Americans but not all Americans are Texans. Of course when we die, eventually our temple work will be done for us and by proxy we will all be baptized into the LDS/Mormon church and be "members" then.
