Does it matter if Jesus really did and said what is in the Gospels?

Yes.

The Gospels teache that there is no other way to salvation than through Christ. Jesus says in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me."

Jesus is the only way of salvation because He is the only One who can pay our sin penalty (Romans 6:23). No other religion teaches the depth or seriousness of sin and its consequences. No other religion offers the infinite payment of sin that only Jesus Christ could provide. No other “religious founder” was God become man (John 1:1,14) – the only way an infinite debt could be paid. Jesus had to be God so that He could pay our debt. Jesus had to be man so He could die. Salvation is available only through faith in Jesus Christ! “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Of course it matters. It's quite a big deal. If you don't believe in what he did or said, one is not saved. The very word "gospel" in itself means quite a bit don't you think?

Depends. If you believe in his divinity, then it certainly matters if he did what they say he did. If you just believe in the teachings, then it doesn't matter so much. A valid argument or a wise saying is still valid and wise even if the speaker is a hypocrite or liar. If a convicted felon told you to lead a clean, honest life you wouldn't become a criminal just because he suggested being honest!

Yes. For faith to really be of any value, it must be based on facts, on reality. Here is why. If you were taking a flight to London, you would probably have faith that the jet is fueled and mechanically reliable, the pilot trained, and no terrorists on board. Your faith, however, is not what gets you to London. Your faith is useful in that it got you on the plane. But what actually gets you to London is the integrity of the plane, pilot, etc. You could rely on your positive experience of past flights. But your positive experience would not be enough to get that plane to London. What matters is the object of your faith--is it reliable? Yes

Not as long as there's no proof either way.

If we had proof, the agnostics could finally get off the fence. There'd be a lot of other converts too. But many people would stubbornly cling to their pre-existing beliefs.

After all, if there's one lesson we can learn from Exodus, it's that people are fickle. It's always "what have you done for us LATELY?" . . . or "show us another miracle . . . are we to believe in you forever just because you parted the sea for us and vanquished our enemies?"

For too many of us, even with proof . . . it may not matter if Jesus is for real or not.

If it does not matter, then perhaps the whole of the Gospels are just made up stories.

yes it matters, being that what is written in the gospels is false, the entire christian faith is founded on lies.

I would say it should matter

All that really matters is how one interprits the STORIES in the Bible. It's just a book of lessons, like Aesop and his fables. It was never meant as a guide on how to live your life every second of every day.

If it didn't, it wouldn't be in there, would it? Go a step further, the bible would be useless for any reason relating to forgiveness of sins, life, death, resurrection, holiness, righteousness, etc., etc.
