Softening Water?

I have had troubles with my tank's PH level. I have bought some PH stabilizer products but according to their label they will not work if the water is hard. I have tried the 'water softener pillows' and aquarium salt but neither seem to help. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Do you have wild caught fish? If not, leave the pH stabilizer products alone. You will screw up the parameters of your water if you don't know what you are doing. 99% of farm raised fish do not need adjustments to their pH, since the farms they are raised on usually have a pH of 7.0-8.0. If you don't know whether or not your fish are farm raised, email me, I work at one.

do u want to soften or harden ur water? to soften u use peat water or black water or even dry leaves and to harden u can add aquarium salt. but to stabilise it is another thing. carbon dioxide lowers ur pH and certain rocks will harden it. so what i assume is that for example ur setup is a soft water setup but when u change water the water u added in is hard so ur pH changes. but becuz of the set up the pH will drop soon agn resulting in the change in pH. or vice versa. if u realise it always drop after changing than its a high pH set up and u may wanna increase the pH of the water u are adding during a change to match the pH in your water.

what i will recommend is to do what your fish seller does for his fishes becuz they will be used to his style, which in this case will be = to water conditions. like if he adds salt after changing or peat water or nothing at all. furthermore if u buy from ur local store than the chances of the water both of u use will be from the same source = same conditions.

hope ur situation will improve. cheeros!

Unless your pH levels are extreme, it's better not to mess with trying to adjust them because they will start to go swinging back and forth for no apparent reason. As long as your pH is at a reasonable level, STABLE (that's the important part) and your fish have been acclimated to that pH, it'll be ok.

take a sample of your water to a pet store and see what they have to say.
