Does freedom depend on law or upon a lack of it?

I think freedom depend on law. Laws supposed to stabilize our lands, if it cannot, then it would only bring about chaos.

Laws are merely tools for social control. All they do is provide a minimum level of expected behavior. Some are good, like 'no murder allowed'. Some do more harm than good, as in the prohibition on Marijuana.

Every law intrudes on 'freedom' in some way, so in general less law means more freedom. In the final analysis however, freedom depends on people acting responsibly and morally. If that is done, the number of laws are completely irrelevant. We don't need laws keeping us from singing loud at 4:00 in the morning if people are polite enough to not sing loud at 4:00 in the morning.

The word Freedom refers to ones perspective or percieved "ability" to chose for themselves about

how what where who or whatever they chose without limiting or infringing on others ability to do the same................

Law, on the other hand, tries to dictate or limit the choices we can make, or our ability to do so, of course with consequences for the decisions that we make that differ from the intended outcome desired by the ones who hope to find some advantage that may or may not benefit, the masses. Most likely groping for gain of only a few or law makers themselves.

Our ability, or a societies ability to impart proper perspectives and priorities about how to live with and treat others as they would want to be, falls short, very short these days..........what once was a matter of choice is no longer ours to make.

For every law THEY make, they must get rid of atleast one other exitsting law..............We lack the common sense we were born with, why is more better? Why are some above the LAW? Why are others, usually the majority, the targets of Law? Law these days is about taking money from someones pockets and putting it in someone elses! Tough Questions, Why are we building more prisons than institutions of higher learning?

You can only have freedom if you don't have anarchy or totaliarian government.

Laws work to protect freedoms. To use an extreme example, laws agains murder or rape defends the freedom of people to live out their natural life span or choose the time and place of sexual intimacy.

It is true that there are a lot of silly laws that have nothing to do with intrinsic freedom, but be thankful that we have laws to

keep people from destructive urges.

Sometimes freedom may depend on law, like when you have to be assured full freedom without any distinction of caste, creed, religion, sex, colour, etc, but at other times law can be too enforcing and you cannot have freedom with it. It depends on each person's point of view and his background.

Freedom is logically, because i have done no research on this whatsoever, on the lack of it, and by that i mean law. The less rules, regulations, boundaries, limits, guidelines the more freedom. Or maybe not. Maybe laws that allow you to do things give you the freedom you're talking about. Allows you to exploit it , fight if your freedom is threaten and makes sure you keep it in any circumstance??? I really don't know......do i?:)

If you are restricted by laws, freedom is not a logical outcome.

If you restrict others by laws, to feel free, you are restricting the freedom of others. Freedom is a general term that we use that applies only to specific actions.

For example,

What about someone's freedom to commit suicide?

What about someone's freedom to self harm?

What about someone's freedom to refuse any and all medical care?

Speaking in generalities is a human problem.

Freedom depends on respect.

I studied your link and pondered the question. Seems to me the relationship between the two is tenuous.
