Amateur Fishing Question?

So - I just started out fishing. I'm brand new and chances are that if any seasoned fisher saw me, he'd laugh at my gear. But anyways, the question I have is about the equipment I need.

There are two locations I fish at, one is a pretty big size lake and the other is a series of small ponds. Since they are enclosed there is no currents and the ponds have small islands scattered throughot them. Inside these locations are Blue Gill, Crappie, Catfish and Trout mainly. So, the question is what would be the best kind of bait?

Currenty I use nightcrawlers, this lure called a torpedo, garlic salmon eggs, a couple spooners, and some small spinners. Also - are you supose to put bait on the lures even though you are constantly reeling them in?

Sorry for the pretty dumb question, but again - this is probably my 2nd time fishing in like 10 years.

You sound as if you have the correct stuff! No need for live bait on lures!

Bluegill try crickets or wax worms!

Crappie try small crappie grade fathead minnows live!

    Cats try chicken livers!

Trout any small mepps or roostertail spinner in chartreuse-white-yellow!

Also use light line for the panfish and trout 2 or 4 lb test!Try using a sip cork rig and change water depths for bites and just have fun please dont worry if others laugh at your gear they are losers!

you don't need put bait on lures it just ruins there action you seem to have some classic lures spoons, spinners, jig and twistertails, have probably caught more fish than any others for the crappie and gills you may want to try downsizing to ultralight tackle and ultralight baits like the REBEL TAD FRY, #3 FLOATING RAPALA, or any small minnow style bait less than 2 inches long for the trout what can I say a worm and afloat is tough to beat. I have had alot of success with a lure called the ACME CASTMASTER for pond trout you can find most of these lures at walmart or whereever you shop also a spinnerbait like the STRIKEKING MINNI-KING is a good bet

You've got many good answer's here already.

    I would add:

Here is a list of what a novice fisher-person needs in their tackle box to fish Bass, Crappie, Bluegills, Walleye, & small Trout.

    1. Small, med, & large "bait-hooks".

    2. Splitshot weight's.

    3. 2-4 bobber's in various sizes.

    4. Extra line to make "leader's",(4 LB & 8LB mono).

    5. 3-4 "Original" floating Rapala's in "gold", "silver", & "perch"/"fire-tiger".

    6. Green-headed 1/8 OZ Jig's

    7. Black-headed 1/8 OZ Jig's

    8. Green Pumpkin curly-tailed "Berkley Gulp" jig-body's.

    9. Black curly-tailed "Berkley Gulp" jig-body's.

    10. 10 Size 2 & 3 "Jig Spinner's",(so you can make a spinnerbait out of the jigs you've already purchased!)

    11. 2-3 Bags of 4-6" plastic worms. (I would get some "Senko's", a bag of 4" Berkley Power-worms in "Camo" color & Cabelas 4" "Caterpillar Worm" in "Pumpkin" color.)

    12. 2 "Topwater" lures of your choice.

    13. 4-6 "Inline" spinnerbait's

    14. Needle-nose plier's,(so you can unhook your fish without getting "Stuck").

    15. A knife

    16. nail-clipper's (these help you tie & un-tie lures)

With just these 16 items you would be well prepared for "most" freshwater situation's.

    Hope this helped? Good luck!

Sounds like you're off to a good start.

The only live bait that I've ever fished with a lure was fishing a shiner on a crappie jig.

Fish, have fun, and don't get discouraged.

a million. your tank is in basic terms too small for 7 fish, except they are all a million inch or smaller. 2. Dropsy is in many situations introduced on by undesirable water high quality. in case you have had new copper pipes put in in the final 6 months, borrow water from a neighbor with older pipes. 3. purchase a water high quality try kit and take a check out the water 4. purchase water conditioner on your fish 5. month-to-month cleansing isn't adequate! I made the errors with messy goldfish and that they have been given ich. you ought to do a 50% water replace a week and use a water vacuum to pump out fish poo etc out of the gravel and pebbles. stable success together with your fish!!!!! i'm in easy terms experienced with goldfish, yet while they coach signs and indicators of swim bladder problems, I feed them shelled, frozen yet defrosted peas cut back up into tiny bites.

your choice of bait is good wind can create current some times a piece of worm or other bait added to the lure will catch fish

No need for bait on the spinners but it can kinda help. it's bad for your presentation though. best bait are the ones you have the waters could be overfished. A boat may be a good I dead.

Well The only thing you didn't mention using is corn which can be great for trout especially under a bober, but everything else you are using seems okay to me.
