Percentage of the meat-eaters consume that comes from animal cruelty?

I've seen many people say only very few slaughterhouses abuse the animals that people consume. So I'm wondering, what is the percent of meat people eat that comes from "bad" meat industries? I'm asking this just for reference.

PS: Please don't flame me about my eating lifestyle. I'm not looking for that right now. :)

PS: I'm a vegetarian, so sorry if you thought I meant I ate meat.

    How can people say without a doubt that they are right, regardless of what side of the fence they are on? To the people that say 100% of them are abusive, did you take the time to personally go to every single farm and slaughterhouse and witness this abuse? And to the people that say it is a small percentage that does abuse, the same question? I'm not going to try and insist that the percentage is small, because I'm not naive. The actual percentage is probably somewhere in the middle.

    coffeeshopnat, you are wrong. I'm not saying that ALL of the organic places treat their animals, but I am saying that there are ones that do. They just don't allow the animals that are treated to be put into the food chain until after a certain amount of time to allow for the medicines to work their way out of the animals system. Some places even keep them longer then what is recommended just to be on the safe side.

    I don't know what the percentage is, to answer your question, and I wouldn't even begin to know where to look. I just felt the need to point out to people that trying to state that their opinion is fact is just plain wrong. State what you want, but please be mindful enough to at least state that you are expressing your own opinion and not actual facts.

    Dear Alice...

    When talking about the cruelty, there were to issues to address.

    Religious Way :

    Research and Study proven that current situation and demand is not facilitating for absolute way to produce meat in "kosher" or "halal" way. It includes from the beginning of animal welfare, minimise suffering and pain, abstain from any blood & fat. This MUST be the central philosophy of any religion.

    In this context, "kosher/halal" is merely just a "trademark" to "please" the consumer with delusion. Is the person asked you is aware of what stated in the religious context? All these condition were created to make one's mind to contemplate that killing should be minimised or avoided, and violence is against all religions, and condemned by the God.

    Legal Way :

    Even though few countries trying to govern the animal welfare, but still the law become an excuse for legalised slavery of animals and industries as an excuse for serial killing and contemplated torturing. In some countries like Singapore which importing livestock and meat, public do not aware the "truth" that these are also product of cruelty as well, graded stringently and only the best product is seen by the consumers. Is that mean that Singapore is caring the animal welfare and no cruelty is exist in the mainstream of livestock production and processing?

    General Conclusion :

    If a child see that "stealing" of an egg from her hen is wrong, then it is wrong. If the kid realise the animal is screaming and crying while slaughtered, then it is cruel.

    No matter what religion we are (if fact my religion allow me eat meat), but love, compassion and mercy must be the central objective of all religions, and free thinkers.

    Psychologically, human can't draw a clear line differentiating love, compassion and mercy only belong to human alone. If the person could “unite” in his mind the meaning of love, compassion and mercy, then he should realise the world war, terrorism and violence is a “product” of political separatists, religious sectarians, fanatics and self-centred persons.

    Therefore, we have the CHOICE. For those still in delusion, will continue with ignorance and egotism.

    Who knows where the meat we eat comes from. I personally have no idea where or what slaughterhouses the meat sold in our local grocery stores come from and to be honest, nor do I want to know. I really doubt that there is any abuse to the animals. What would be the point seeing as how they are going to be slaughtered anyway? What kind of question is this for anyway? Do you eat meat?

    Perhaps this is so but the food processing plants must meet standards first in order to sell them to the consumer. Then it's up to the customer to store or cook the food the right way in order to ensure that we are not contaminated in any way. That's called being a responsible buyer and consumer of the food for not just myself but my family as well. Later.

    I'm not sure that a definitive statistic is possible. Certainly "100%" is a foolish guess. Likely a statistical improbability just by some of the other examples give here ...i.e. the 4-H raised cattle.

    Until there are uniform and humane standards that have the force of law for slaughterhouses and a way to enforce them, any figure is going to be a wild guess.

    The cruelty that people talk about comes not only from abuse at the slaughter house, but from the way the animals are treated during their entire lifetimes.

    Animals have feelings too. They love their families and their children just like humans do.

    But humans take farm animals and force them to live in crowded, filthy conditions their whole lives.

    They take their children away from them.

    When it is time to slaughter them, the animals are full of fear, they are terrorized. They are hurt.

    The only times that are not animal cruelty is, for instance, when an expert hunter finds and kills an animal swiftly without terrorizing it.

    Or, on a family farm, when an animal is slaughtered in as respectful a way as possible, after having lived a good life with freedom of movement and having been allowed to keep its offspring; that is not animal cruelty.

    Remember that when you eat meat from an animal that has grown up in filthy, crowded conditions, with many chemicals and hormones in its food, and spent the last few minutes of its life in a state of panic and terror, there are chemicals in that meat that are bad for you to eat: chemicals which were put there by the meat producer, and chemicals from the animal's fear and sorrow.

    Well, in India (which is where I'm from) we get our meat usually straight from the source. There are no humane slaughterhouses and nice packaged cuts at the grocery shops.

    Usually, you go up to your neighborhood butcher, pick out a nice plump chicken in the size you want from a display of live chickens and they'll kill it and dress it for you right in front of your eyes.

    As for other meat, I've heard people (Die Hard non vegetarians, that too) say after a single glimpse of an Indian Slaughterhouse that they're gonna go vegan. You really don't wanna hear about the brutality over there.

    The method of transportation for chickens (live ones) is to tie them up by their feet to the handlebars of a bicycle and pedal to your destination thru roads full of traffic in the hot sun. Once they get to the butcher's shop, they're stuffed into little wire cages crowded with about a dozen other chickens and there they stay, until it's time for them to go to the great Frying Pan in the Sky.

    For goats and other meat animals, they're packed into open trucks with hardly any standing room, let alone space to lie down in, and driven to their destinations, however far that might be....

    Most animals are not stunned or rendered unconscious before they're killed as most ppl believe the myths that dead animals don't bleed out well and knocking them out toughens the meat.So these animals are hung upside down and killed, often while wide awake. You'll find a clip here that shows you conditions at one of India's largest slaughterhouses and. Watch it only if you have a cast iron stomach.

    Most Indians have these facts shoved in their faces quite often, but too often they don't care....

    Therefore, the percentage of meat that Indians eat that comes from "BAD" meat industries? 99.99%

    Recently, companies have started coming out with packaged meat in grocery stores, but the products don't really seem to have caught on yet... They might account for the remaining 0.01% I guess.... But, this is an optimistic estimate as I don't really know where these companies get their meat from.

    I buy my meat from a local farmer.

    The meat in my freezer now was raised with love and care by a 4-H kid. Showed at the 4-H fair and then sold so he could make money to pay for the feed he fed it.

    I know where my meat comes from.

    Wow...how can some of you say that you don't think the animals in slaughter houses are abused...People should educate themselves about what they put in to their body.

    I agree with the first answer, just about a 100% of animals are abused in the meat industry even if they say free range or organic. The rare occurence would be like the person above who actually knew where their meat came from and who raised it.

    Meat eaters think anyway you kill an animal is fine as long as you put it on the table. Humanitarians think no way is good and leave it off the table. Never the train shall meat.
