On July 14, 1969, the Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve System announced that currency notes in denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 would be discontinued immediately due to lack of use. Although they were issued until 1969, they were last printed in 1945. These notes are legal tender and may be found in circulation today; however, most are probably in the hands of collectors.

$100 is currently the largest, though larger bills, including the $500 have been printed in the past. Most were phased out between 1929 and 1969; in '69 Nixon gave an executive order to stop their printing in order to stop organized crime.

1000 dollar bills exist but they are only for currency exchange between governments. There are only 2 in private hands at this point.

I think there are $500 and even $1,000, but I also know that banks are supposed to report large cash transactions, because the feds want to know who has a lot of cash. Mostly I think they are looking for drug dealers, but possibly other sorts of illegal transactions as well.
