It is the art and science of engineering, designing, and constructing nuclear power plants, and then working inside the plants for operation and maintenance.

A nuclear engineer almost has to be the "jack of all engineering trades". He/she has to know electrical engineering (both instrumentation-and-control and power), mechanical engineering (cooling systems, piping design, etc.), civil engineering (containment vessel design), and of course knowledge of radiation.
