Is an 18 week ultrasound accurate for Gender Prediction?

My doctor said to come in for my ultrasound in 4 weeks (that would put me at 19 weeks), but the receptionist put me in in 3 weeks (that would put me at 18 weeks). I didn't realize she had put me a week early until I had already left the office.

I'd like to keep this 18 week appointment, but I want to be really sure as to the gender. (I'd hate for them to tell me it's a girl just to have it grow boy parts a week later.)

So my question is: Should I keep the 18 week appointment? Is 18 weeks far enough along to accurately tell the gender? Or should I buckle and reschedule the appointment?

My doctor told me that it's easiest to tell after 16 weeks. I'm planning to wait until 20 weeks though just to be sure. You may want to consider pushing it back a few weeks just in case.

    Best of luck and congratulations!

Hi..ultrasound is a very good way to detect the gender of your baby. If it is a girl you should see three little white lines..that's the labia. I have two girls and I'm pregnant with a boy. Both of my girl sono's looked the same regarding the three white lines. however it seems that you are just a little early to be getting a gender ultrasound. Generally those are done about 20 weeks when everything is a little larger. Reason I say this is because at 18 weeks with this pregnancy the doctor did an ultrasound and could kinda tell he was a boy but was not positive..when i went the next week for my ultrasound (I have diabetes so I get one every week) They could see it very clearly. Anyway..on your picture you are looking between your little ones legs...if there are the three little white lines Congrats on your girl..I wish i could explain what the boy looks like but you can tell its not a girl its almost a white oval at first. Mine were correct...hope I helped and good luck with the baby.

I hate to tell you but even if you came in at 24 weeks there is no way to guarantee the gender. Ultrasounds are not 100% accurate. If you were to have amino then you would know for certain. There is a very good chance they should be able to tell you the gender with accuracy. Keep in mind also the baby doesn't always co-operate sometimes they just wont display themselves LOL

  • I've heard that for gender prediction, anytime after 16 weeks should be fairly safe.

Ask what "percentage" sure the doctor is. 50% sure it's a girl? 100% sure it's a boy?

IF they are wrong, it's usually becasue they didn't see boy parts & said "Girl." If they see boy parts, it's usually a sure thing.

    Good luck.

Source(s): Lucky me, I was "high risk." I had a dozen ultrasounds, and my little boys just loved showing off their "parts," every single time.

well it all depends on how good and accurate the ultrasound machine is-at 18 weeks you can tell if the machine can pick up a clear pic!!And if when you go to the doc and do not get the sex of the baby maybe you can get another ultrasound done

usually between 18-22 weeks is the best time so its not going to grow a boy part if they see a girl in a week.

yes you normally get the app. for gender prediction 18-22 weeks. but you baby mught not also be formed all the way. ask if you can get a 20 week app. (which is also the half-way mark, so you can tell them that) and your little baby should be fully formed byt then!

you'll be fine...most of the time they like to see you between 17-20 weeks...i had mine done at 18 weeks and they told me it was a girl...and it still is! a boy would have his little boy parts by then...good luck..now all you need is for the baby to cooperate! make sure to drink some oj or eat a little sugar before you go to get them moving!

It just depends on the baby... I went in at 17wks and was able to tell that is was a girl. The doc told me that it will depend if the baby will give you a good view or not.

    Good luck!
