How much is the average payment for child support for one child?

Pregnant and baby isn't born yet. I live in Tennessee and have no clue about the amount. Any other advise about child support would be helpful. I don't want to punish the Dad just need some help. Dad wants to be part of baby's life. Don't live together and never have. He currently doesn't have a job.

Update:

The reason I used the word "punish" is that I heard that if he wouldn't get a job or pay child support, he could go to jail. That would be punishment. I didn't want him to go to jail.

Go to this web site and you can play with the numbers and get an idea of how much he will have to pay you with how much he will make when he gets a job. I am going through this right now in florida so this calculator really helped me and it was right on the money.

Well if he isnt working its gonna be a long hard battle to get anything out of him on a consistant basis......

they will order 20% of his income...... so a min wage job will pay 150-200 a week....... 200X 4 weeks = 800 which would be at the most 160.00 a month.

200X 5 weeks= 1000 is 200.00 a month. if he already has a child he is paying for it could be even less...........

But they can set it at 15.00 a month if he cant find or keep a job.

odds are they wont make him pay anything on daycare or health insurance. But the alot of states do have free or low cost insurance programs for kids.........

The only way the state will care is if you are on welfare. My ex pays nothing never has, and wont work, but im not on any assistance.

Ideally support should be 50/50............ but 99% of the time its not.

The judge can make him get a job, but odds are he wont keep it, then you will drag him back to court and repeat all over again. Alot of men chose to work " under the table" and work a part time job to base child support on.

He doesnt have to pay anything until the baby is born, and DNA is established, this can take many many months.

Child Support depends on how much you and the dad are making if you are the only one working then he cant really pay. The amount is going to be around $200 to $300 a month unless he has a lot of money or gets a really good job, then it might be little higher. sorry this might not be what you want to hear but it is the truth

child support is not punishment, in any way, shape or form. i have no idea why someone would think that.

every state is different (slightly) about this issue, so check the child support calculator below.

today, they base the amount ordered, by the income of BOTH parents. if one parent isnt working, they calculate an income for them (if skilled, then the amount they are capable of making; if UNskilled, then min wage amount is calculated in). if the child is young, some states exclude the mothers income (dont require an income amount for her). if the mother works, then the expense of daycare comes in.

    many factors.

but keep in mind, the honor system doesnt work, thats been proven. thats also why the state and federal government passed stronger child support laws... they are TIRED of people not paying for their children.

YES, Dad should be part of the childs life; but child support and visitation are two separate issues (and handled separately in court too). but some fathers dont, so brace yourself (they talk a good talk though).

    there are 2 kinds of parents;

---those who love and take interest in their childs lives

---those who view their children as a burden and chore.

if you two can do it civil and do whats best for the child, then you've beaten the odds and you have my admiration.

It depends on how much income you both make and since he isn't working the judge will figure out want needs to be done, most likely he'll probably make him get a job.I have a cousin who pays around $700.00 in child support for one child and my husband pays close to $400.00 in child support to his ex for two kids.

There are a lot of variables. If you go to court, they look at income, time with child, etc. It will vary from family to family!
