Why would the rich man go to hell in the story of Lazarus and the rich man?

The story is a parable meant to teach a lesson. It was never meant to be taken as anything other than that. Many Christians have taken this parable and formed doctrine with it and yet the doctrine they have formed of eternal torment is refuted hundreds of times in the bible. The wages of sin is death, plain and simple. It is not now or ever has been eternal torment in hell.

He did not say he was going to Hell, he said it would be hard for a rich man to get to Heaven. If you don't believe that, take a look at Hollywood. Not all, but a lot of them live sinful lives. The drugs, the adultery, and many of them marry several times. Money takes most of us on an ego trip. Probably because there is so much temptation. Think about it, all the beautiful women, and men, all the glamor, and fame, would make it harder for a person to be humble. When people have enough money to do anything they want to do, a lot of the times that's precisely what they do. Anything.

One was justified under the old Covenant by having faith in the God of Abraham. If you read the story again, you will notice that the Rich Man seemed to admit that he did not believe in God until he was in Hell.

All men were/are judged according to what they know. According to the scripture at that time, the rich man had not honored God and followed the law. Therefore he was condemned. It had nothing to do with wealth, but with actions.

The rich man gained everything but lost his soul and started to worship money.

Some of us consider this passage in scripture to be a parable and not literal. Jesus loved a good parable.

Because cult leaders don't want followers with money. They want followers who have nobody to depend on but the leader and other members. Every cult I've ever seen has made sure that its members had no financial resources, because you can't control a person who has enough money to leave, or fight.
