Rhodesian Ridgeback Coat colour?

ive seen a lovely pup that i am intrested in buying. I love big dogs and have had 2 before. I love ridgebacks and ive seen some but they are black and tan? Ive never know balck and tan before they have no papers but are purebreed? Ive looked on the internet and cant find anythink!

is this unusual are they crossed with maybe a doberman?

Thanks and best wishes

I've got Ridgeback and she's just tan coloured,I've also skimmed through Stig G. Carlson's book about the breed and he says that they should be either tan or liver colour.

It sounds to me like you have Ridgeback crossed with another dog.

That is definately a cross breed dog. Ridgebacks are supposed to be either wheaten or red, or a mixture between the two. Some can have black but not proper black. They normally have this on their muzzels, chest and sometimes their back end. The owners of the kennels that i work at are Rhodesian Ridgeback breeders and are currently the top breeder in England for them. They currently have 6 adults and 2 puppies. See more on their website.

Rhodesian ridgebacks are ALWAYS wheaten, NEVER black & tan. What they're selling is a crossbreed. The link below shows the breed standard for rhodesian ridgebacks:

I'd be more than a little concerned at a breeder advertising their dogs as purebred when they are mongrels. If they'll lie about that, what other unscrupulous things will they have done?

I'm sure the puppies are lovely - all puppies are. Thing is, if they've not been bred with enough care even to make sure the breed is what they say it is, have they had the relevant health checks for their breed? (btw, unless you know the pedigree, it's difficult to know what the relevant checks are).

I'd recommend you had a word with somebody from the breed clubs and got advice from them. There's contact details on the link I gave you above (just scroll down).

Alternatively, are you willing to rescue? If so, the link below should help:

Ridgebacks are not black & Tan!! They are light wheaten to red wheaten with, possibly, a very few white hairs. They could have been crossed with any other black & tan breed, the sire could even be a crossbreed himself.

Any Ridgeback, registered or not, should have been tested for Hip Dysplasia before being bred from. I doubt if these pups have tested parents.

Ridgebacks are sually a pale yellow blondecolour but I doubt this one as been crossed with a Doby. It is more likely to be a throw back from a previous generation. A doby wouldn't have the strength to hold her in mating. Possible it could be a rottie but again I doubt it. That would involve a big scrap between 2 big dogs. I eould try th.e net again

Sounds like a crossbreed. We have a 6 yr old Ridgy, she's a red wheaten colour with a white zig-zag on her chest & a bit of white on her tummy.Have never seen any black apart from on nose area.If this pup was a purebreed it would come with papers.Keep searching for the best pure breed ever!!Good luck.

They sound as if they are mixed breed. I have never personally seen a Ridgeback that wasn't the single gingery colour.

The only Rhodesian Ridgebacks that I have seen all have been the rust (red fawn) color.

Their color ranges from light wheaten to red wheated. They do not come in black and tan so if you've seen one, its definitely not a pure bred.
