Do you want to know the results of counting the # of times Jesus Christ is mentioned at my LDS (Mormon) church

I counted today (Cheese and Rice asked if one of us would be willing to count -- so I did)

Here is my report:

It is the Sunday before Pioneer day (the day the first pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley) so I tract how many times the following were said:

Jesus Christ = 201

Joseph Smith = 1

Pioneer/Early Saints = 8

Brigham Young = 0

Gorden B Hinkley = 4

Ezra Taft Benson = 1

Spencer W. Kimble = 1

I attended Sacrament Mtg., part of Primary, part of Sunday School, and Priesthood Mtg. (Elders Q.)

Hinkley, Benson and Kimble are recent Prophets (Hinkley is our current Prophet)

Honorable mention: (Peoples names came up often that I did not plan to track)

Peter

Matthew

Luke

Nephi

Lehi

Helamen

Harod

Pilot

Roman Soldier

Jonah

Update:

Just to answer some Questions:

Yes pencil and paper (hashmarks)

Lord was mentioned with Jesus Christ or in place of Jesus Christ often but I wasn't counting

I can count and pay attention (I'm a multi-tasker)

Update 2:

Six prayers

Update 3:

Thanks penguin -- I never was the best never the best speller

Those are not the results I would have expected, however I do believe that some weeks will be stronger than others. For example, around Christmas time, you might expect people to talk about Joseph because it's his birthday or something.

Also you can't really count the prayers, but I'll give you a pass on that.

Interesting. I know Jesus was mentioned lots of times in my class - I teach 9 year olds. (At least when I could get a word in with all their talking. We were talking about the Parable of the Talents. They have a talent for getting off topic!)

We didn't even talk about the Pioneers, but we are California Mormons!

Given that it was pioneer week. Joseph Smith was mentioned 6 times, and the Savior about 150.

Sounds about right...way to go...kind of an intersting way to spend the day at church!

When I was young, maybe in a ploy to get us little kids to pay more attention to general conference, my parents had a list of words like "love, Jesus, kind, etc." to listen for and we were supposed to count how many times they were said. I think I will do that with my children...

    Thanks for sharing.

Just an added stat: In the Book of Mormon, Jesus is mentioned by name an average of once every 2.8 verses.

How interesting. I think, to make the results even more intriguing, it should be done a few weeks in a row and then compared. The results might be astounding.

That is interesting. That is a lot of mentions! I know that Jesus Christ is mentioned many times but not sure its that many times. BUt its definitely mentioned more than any other name which is the idea! It is His Church.

Wow.... I don't want to count anything 200 times... and in only four hours...You must've been taking notes and making hashmarks like a son-of-a-gun....

  • Must have been a doosy of a sermon in order to mention arouund 220 names.

  • Great! I remembered Cheese and Rice's question about that too and I counted Joseph Smith, they only mentioned him 1 time today ^_^ I would not count Jesus! they always mention it a lot of times along with the God/Heavenly Father's name.

    Good Job!!!
