Toyota Yaris or Toyota Corolla?

I would like to buy my wife a car because her old one needs to be exchanged for something better. We're on a tight budget and she drives 130 miles to work (and back) everyday. Its either a Corolla or a Yaris. She's interested in the Yaris because its smaller and she feels it will be easier to park/drive in the city but I'm worried about highway crosswinds and that a Yaris might not be so safe at speeds of above 74mph that she goes at. However a Corolla is really quite expensive for us esp when she needs the full package that offers the cruise control. Which one should we choose?

So long as you can afford it, nothing is too expensive for your wife. It is obvious you prefer the Corolla, so get her the Corolla; I just got one for my wife, and boy! how she loves the car.

By trials and tribulations, the Corolla has been around since the late 1970's. The Corolla is a separate company by Toyota so it is reliable. The Yaris is new and still going through tests and recalls. Don't trust it. Not to mention getting parts for a Corolla are much easier to find and cheaper compared to the Yaris. The name Yaris sounds like the probable name of a fat lazy man somewhere in Europe. Get the Corolla . Good luck!!!!!

I have a Yaris and I love it. We've already put 39,000 miles on it. For the first year we had it we drove it 100 miles a day to commute for work. We also live in an extremely windy area and drive at least 80, usually 85mph. The car does fine in high winds. You don't really feel like you're going to fast for the car until you get over 85.

It handles very well, its comfortable and easy to drive. It does very tight turns - I can make a u turn on a 2 lane road and go up a parking lot aisle the wrong way and swing around into a space - without making 3 point turns. Plus it gets great gas milage - we estimate 45mpg - even at 80mph. I like all the little storage compartments, and I love the cupholders - much better than other cars. It also has an aux. jack for my ipod. The trunk is huge for a sedan that small, which was really important to us. The only negative is if you are tall and want passengers in the back seat, they will be a little cramped. But we're both short and have toddlers, so it works fine for us.

Of course, it gets great gas milage because it has a small engine - so it doesn't have as much power as a V6. But it still does very well, it excellerates (sp?) quickly and does fine on the freeway going uphill - I usually pass nice cars going uphill at 80mph.

We got the sedan "S" model, with the power package - cruise control (a must for long commutes) and power everything. I think it cost $17,000. It was a very good price for the car we got.

If your wife wants a Yaris, get her one!

Safety wise, both are almost the same. Camry could be a better stable car for a long drive. But as you have economical constraints, Yaris is equally good. Is that she is going to drive 130 Miles a day? Yaris is again better for the seat that supports the back.

Yaris is a good car for ladies. Ask her to start home 15 mins early to avoid speeding. You will have even fuel economy with Yaris hatchback.

Do not get the yaris if it makes you worry about you wife's safety. Spring for the corolla, it may be a bit more expensive, but theres a reason why it's one of the best selling cars ever. It's reliable and safe and will probably last longer.

The corolla would be my choice. The Yaris is kind of dorky. Also the mpg is about the same between the 2. The corolla is bigger and probably safer. Spend the extra few grand and get the corolla.

Toyota has made a lot of improvement on the 2007 Yaris, but Corolla is still a better model.
